Hello I'm looking for advice on my 1977 Targa. Recently I came to the conclusion my 3 pronged CD ignition module crapped out. My battery boiled over as well.

1. Perhaps my regulator died and the alternator overcharged the battery and wrecked the CD box? Any thoughts? Thanks.

2. since the CD boxes are so pricey, would it be smart or sacreligious to use a MSD unit? Where would I get my original rebuilt for a reasonable price? Thanks

Zims Autotechnik sells rebuilt boxes with either a new Permatune unit installed inside the Bosch box, or rebuilt Bosch units with the LOUD capacitor inside. Permatunes will be silent.

I'd say you are correct in your diagnosis that a failing voltage regulator took out the CD box.

Sacrilege to install an MSD unit? Not if there are no permanent modifications made to the car & it can be easily returned to stock. Save all the components. My personal opinion of course.

Great, thanks for the quick response. I just wasn't sure when I go to re-sell the vehicle at some point if potential buyers would be turned off by the lack of the original whistling sort of sound. Thanks for the contact name.
