Looking for some inspiration (aka ideas to steal) for some baja fenders. Car will be nothing special, but I don't want to spend the money for fiberglass that I know will get torn up riding in the woods.

Thinking about bending tube for the frame work and skinning with sheetmetal, very minimalist look. Any photos of similar examples?

I just bought some pre-made metal ones intended for DIY trailers. They where only $12 a Pacific steel and fit reasonably well. Tube framed ones would be a stronger but these where easy, I bet you could do something similar for Baja.

I made these from 1/2"conduit they do work. Not for everyone but could be skinned on top or on bottom I chose to inset panels. The beauty is in the attachment bracket that allows you to use the stock fender mounting hole. I can take a pic and post if you need I also stole the idea for the bracket from a samba member. It was a brilliant. Saw it once made a mental note then when came time to build could not find it again. Searched forever and even posted a question. Then just muddeld through it from memory

^that is exactly what I have in mind, but with a few more radius corners. Conduit is a good idea, it will give before the rest of the body and it is dirt cheap

I'm plannin on doing this eventually too. It's amazing how quickly the gravel just from dirt roads will erode the front of the rear fenders at 60mph. I have ever enlargening white circles. Not to mention the stress cracks that spell certain impending doom for them.

The EMT conduit IS a good idea. I decided to use it for my roof rack that holds two kayaks and it's stout. Conduit is also very easy to shape with a cheapo electricians' stick. I think I would go with a larger diameter tube though.

I'd be curious to see close up you mounting system if you don't mind Terry. I was going to use just the original fender holes but your's looks a little more involved than that>>>?

Here is some photos guys. Sorry they are a little dirty. I was out bombing around in Frank on the weekend. The fenders were not enough to keep the windows from getting pasted with mud so added generic mud flaps. Now the front just catches the nerf bar and rear fenders. The rears no longer throw mud on top of the car. If you are beside or behind car you are getting a mud bath HAHAHA

If you are worried about breaking fiberglass fenders think about this: When your Baja makes contact with a tree, something has to give. In the case of fiberglass fenders, they are the weak spot and will crack / break. However, if you make some tubular fenders, they are going to be stronger then the sheet metal body panels they are mounted to. So now instead of breaking a fender, you have crushed in the body panel. For myself, I prefer to stay with fiberglass. It is a lot easier to patch a fiberglass fender, then to pull out a body panel.

not if they are held together with washers and conduit. lol I was starting to think about a frame but instead of the sheet metal you could cut thick rubber mudflap ?

I loved the look of my fiberglass fenders. the problem was they were not doing anything with a 6" wider beam and 3x3 rears. Function over form or something like that Very Happy Here is a better shot of those fenders.
