Can someone please confirm what front wheel bearings I should have on my 63? 311 405 625 inner 311 405 645 outer? What's on there are tapered roller bearings, but looking at parts online, they look flat ball type - and I don't see anyone as listing them pre 66

my front right inner is shot. the lock washers were trashed and allowed the spindle nuts to tighten up - lots of metallic colored grease. I want to buy all 4 and get it done right

anyone know the SKF or FAG numbers? are they the same as a 66 beetle? (for some reason that's stuck in my head)

thanks in advance. Bummed I didn't find this earlier, did all the brakes all the way around and got to the front right last as it's hardest to get to in my garage

Tapered (early) ones available here:

http://www.vwispwest.com/311405625.html

It's where I got mine for my 1965. Looks like it is the same as the Beetle.

You can call them to verify you get the right one- they have great customer service.

timken set 1 ,311 405 645, LM11749/LM11710

any bearing shop or flaps should carry good quality tapered bearings, don't buy offshore crap.

Do these Timken #'s apply to a 66 square too? I have a new set of rotors coming Monday.

for a brand that has an office and warehouse in Houston - it sure isn't easy to buy Timken bearings locally. Cheap as chips on eBay though

Next question. Is that stupid axle double jam nut locking plate really only early type 3? I think it is, as it's a 311 part number. 66 bug went to the Allen style, that I thought I could use until I looked at the dust cap - Doh!

Thanks - I have a some more stuff to order from ISPWest again so no biggie on the lock plates.

I did just score a pair of those NOS right side wheel cylinders in the classifieds. One of these days my car will be "safe" to drive again...

If so, those are 64-65.

Written part numbers aren't always correct. Note that he's listing early rear Variant cylinders, but they're two bolt.

Another thing, that 22 on it, means that they're 22.2. Earlies are 20.64 I believe.

mine are 22.2

Book says those early 20.64 are only to chassis 27849

Part A 22.2mm from 27850 to 221974

And that squarebacks already had the 22.2mm A part number on it from the beginning

I am reading this right, right?

Do yours look like the ones you just bought? That's probably all that matters. Laughing

dunno, I'm at work and slapped everything back together this weekend when I saw that a bad lock plate allowed the right front nuts get too tight and wear out the bearings. Hope so - cause I'm tired of buying shit that doesn't fit and I really try to buy by part number

Edit - I just remembered. Mine definitely have L and R on them. When I blasted the driver side with brake clean - I saw the L and remembered that. So I think these are correct

Michael's right, 061A and 062A will look (and fit) like the earlier cylinders, not the later ones. The early bridge line between each wheel's two cylinders won't fit the ones you bought.

So no A and A are the same except 20.64 vs 22.2mm bore?

They are outwardly the same, so I would say yes.
