Hi all, I am looking into buying a 66 slider standard that needs a lot of work. Can someone explain how it works, where parts can be sourced, and what differences are there. Does the door mount at the rocker and side track? Pics would be great.

check out my build.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=617151
I've had my slider for 10 years.
Its basically the same except for passenger side inner and outer rocker. The out rigger is also different.
What model are you looking at for slider? Panel, standard, deluxe? _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Standard. Where do you get your metal? Did you fab it? _________________ WANTED: Annis Morrill Corp. dealer information and stuff

If the bus is lacking the sliding mechanism, get one with hinged doors. Don't go through the trouble of looking for the sliding mechanism. The cost involved will just make life more difficult in getting the bus running. |

I agree with Lightice. Sliding doors were a expensive option even when specified new from the factory. Finding parts are a nightmare.
They are just too rare.

I'll take some picks of the outrigger and jack point I had to modify for the passenger front. The out rigger is much shorter and the jack point had to be trimmed. Other than that the rest of the metal is exactly the same. Besides the door mechanism. Fortunately mine is all intact. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

slider door bottom:
i just removed the out rigger and jackpoint in order to weld in new ones but without everything it looks like this!
outrigger had to modified to fit. It is shorter due to the inner rocker, same with the jackpoint.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there special latches used on slider buses too?

Standard sliding buses, have 1 popout window on the door side. The first window.
And it opens from the rear, with the special latch, and special glass.
The sliding mechanism is different from bay window, the handle is difficult to get as well (if you want to key it for a 66), else a bay window handle can fit.
The jackpoint outrigger is different due to the sliding cutout.
The sliding door side, exterior side member is same as bay window.
The inner sliding rail is different from bay window.
The floor board, u can get the standard and modify the ends.
The rubber is not easy to get as well, but you can improvise on using a square profile rubber. You'll need to cut and join yourself in most cases.
Given a chance, and through my experience with one, if I have 2 buses infront of me in same (needing restoration) condition, I'd just take the one with hinged doors, the parts bill on a slider door may be enough for a lot of replacement metal pieces. |

I believe a member on this forum (vintage dreamz) has a spare windowed sliding door with parts still attached. Expensive though. |

Does anyone know if the bay window sliding door internal handle : 211843642A will fit the 64-66 exterior sliding door shaft?
I need a confirmation before ordering a handle, mine is wobbly and seemed to have been 'modified' from the winged door handle. |

I have the early bay esceuteon and handle currently working in my 64 bus. Must file door to accept slightly larger esceuteon. Oh shit I thought you meant exterior handle. That handle should fit since Im using the exterior bay window door handle. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |
