I was going to build a engine test stand this week, looked around on TheSamba and it didn't look that hard. Question is what is a stock transmission made of? I know the old motor blocks were magnesium but was wondering about the transmissions just in case I start cutting into it and sparks start flying....... and wont go out Embarassed

also what is the best method for cutting? I have a cutoff wheel or a sawzall with metal blade, any other tool that will do the trick.

they are magnesium, and you have to try really hard to set one on fire. It's really, really not easy. Sawzall or cut off wheels will work.
The dust from cutting the case is a different matter, sweep it up, as that can and will catch fire easily. I had a surprise when some welding sparks hit some mag shavings Shocked
only lasted a few seconds but was bright and hot

I used the bell-housing from a bus gearbox, it's bolt-on (bolt-off?).

When you're sawing the magnesium, it's all good until you brush up against steel, then the sparks fly, and it's like someone took your picture in 1920...with a big flash! won't be enough to light the housing, unless you're really unlucky.

Sawzall and shop vac.... Keep cutting dust to minimum... IF it goes "poof" in your lap (clearancing bellhousing) its a real surprise...Ask me how I know....

IF you can find one a 002 bus bell housing it the best (091 requires specific starter)

Bell housing mounted on "build stand" to be used as a "run stand"...

At minimal needs...

You guys are making this too difficult, 5 minutes with a Sawzall will get a piece of bellhousing cut from the tranny case to mount a starter. Cut enough to get the left (right side) studs for a two bolt mount.

I clamp a VR to the starter with hose clamps and wire the gen so it works, that's a toggle for ign and a gen light. The oil light is separate.

I use an outboard motor fuel tank (2 gal?) for fuel supply,

You can run it on the ground, on a stand (?!) or on a cart.

I usually use a cart.

You don't want this thing to take up acreage when you store it, unless you have a 100,000sf building that's empty.

Good Luck!

I'm wondering about the bell housing height, are most really low so you can just slid the engine to it and bolt up? also what's the best method to bolt a saw'd trans half to a stand?

About only place you can bolt a sawzalled one is where R&P side covers are...

Bell housing is only maybe 5-10 pounds with starter a bit more.... bell housing mounted low because I use a atv jack to move motors around...

Also to me a engine mounted high (on typical yoke) is to susceptible to off balance and falling when running....

Check "engine run stand", "engine test stand" thread(s) for more details...

Shocked

The Type 2 bell housings are no longer the cheap route. Not sure what they're going for in your neck of the woods, but I got $75 out of the last one I sold recently. You should be able to find a Type 1 case/starter chunk for less than $20.

I don't know - looks like a leaverite to me - and ready to run. Put some rockers on the bottom and you can entertain the grandkids later on...

I'll buy all the ones you can find for that price! You can quintuple your money by selling it to one of the few with wanted adds in the classifieds offering $50-$65.

I wish I lived where I could find a housing to make a engine test stand as cheap as has been posted here. Best I got was a complete transmission for $150. I'm in SW Colorado.
