Did you put on new wires? Judging by your pictures you still had the stock style 2 piece wires and you ripped the end off one.

Yeah I put on new wires not new spark plugs. Is it possible to mess up the old spark plugs? Maybe I was too forceful with the new wires?

Have you done what Cusser said?

There should be no good reason to replace the spark plugs at this point.

Yes I checked all the wires. Everything is hooked up right. The engine turns over just won't start.

This is the first time I've had to work on a car so... I'm new. Sorry

very unlikely. you should feel the little spring in the lead connector scrape the threads on the plug tip when you put them on. What type of leads did you use? some aftermarket leads require you to put back the screw on connector on the plug.

You said you had to wrestle the gen out, so check your carb and distributor to see if anything has been knocked off during the process. while you are at it also check all the correct wires are still connected to the coil.

Finally, you say that your gen went bad. how did you determine that? you may have to check your voltage regulator, too.

Maybe there was nothing with it all along and the car was just out of gas? Confused

No... the car isn't out of gas....

I followed the steps in this and I get no spark from the wire...

it may be as simple as a disconnected wire.

Exactly what wires need to be plugged into the distributor and the ignition coil. I have compared what I did to a picture from before and it looks the same...

download the wiring diagram for your '72 super from the following page, the connections at the coil are quite simple to follow.

Okay, I checked the wiring from the diagram and I had it wired wrong. Now it starts for half a second and then pops and turns off.

got it to start. Had to hold the pedal down and turn the key. However, I can't let off the pedal or else it turns off and it sounds like a lawn mower... what!?!

Didnt you loosen an intake manifold earlier? Maybe you should tighten it again. Vacuum leaks will cause the symptoms you are describing.

Timing. Are you using points? Find a procedure to statically time it, that should get it to at least start and run, then you can use a timing light to set the advance correctly.

Also - since you were messing w/your intake manifold, are you sure you didn't end up w/a major vacuum leak?

[NOTE: I've been "offline" for about a month so missed the beginning of this thread. For the record, I've changed the alternator on my '72 Super by using an 18" breaker bar on the 36 mm nut, loosened the 4 bolts that hold the alternator fan shroud tin to the shroud, removed the carb, and the alternator stand, removed the alternator, installed the new one, voila, no engine drop, manifold or shroud removal. It was actually quite easy to do it this way.]

Does your carb have an idle circuit cut-off solenoid (sticking out of the left side of the carb, and has a wire connection on it), and is it connected to power?

If it does, and it's disconnected, that's pretty much exactly how it will run.

I'd double check the firing order of the plug wires too.
