Ok so I have a 1980 standard beetle and I am in need of a gas heater for winter. I was wondering if anyone know which heaters fit my car because so far I have heard different things from different people? Also if anyone know where to get a complete gas heater kit I would greatly appreciate it.

Standard Beetles up to 70 (or 71?) came with a B-2 Eberspacher gas heater. After 72, standard Beetles came with a BN-2.

I prefer the simplicity of a B2, so that's what I installed in my 75 Standard Beetle. It's not a simple installation like it would be for an earlier car due to the lever that controls the heater. This lever is to the left of the steering column and on post 72 cars, the fuse panel is where the lever needs to be. I was able to alter the shape of the lever to work around the fuse panel.

A BN4 from a Thing could probably be made to fit as well. It is a bit bigger than the BN2, but may be easier to find.

There is also another manufacturer of gas heaters approved by VW for standard beetles. Stewart Warner South Wind. They made two different types. One that mounted on the passenger side of the truck and one that mounted on the driver's side of the trunk. Very easy to install and maintain. There are several in the want ads.

But beware of any used heater you buy, it could have rust you can't see in the combustion chamber that would put CO into the cabin.

I have a South Wind installed on the driver's side of my car. I keep it clean and good gas hoses. Works wonderfully in the winter. Usually have to turn it off it gets so hot in there

IMO this is bad advice.
A Thing BN4 doesn't "fit" a Beetle because there aren't any ducts available. Sure you could waste your time trying to make it work, but why would you when other heaters are properly engineered to fit perfectly?
Easier to find? Doubtful. A few thousand Things were made, millions of Beetles. Ask any Thing owner. Nothing specific for their cars are easier to find than the equivalent Beetle part.

There are a couple of user/install manuals in the Technical section. While they might not be for the particular heater you buy, the South Winds all operate the same way, just that some of the parts are in different locations depending on the install setup.

Out of curiosity,

How long does a bug last in a salt slurry?

Most new cars have some protections.

My brake rotors unprotected become a blooming onion of rust right away.

Have I not seen bug victims of salt.

It's a sad sorry situation to see.

stay warm.

PS
I spent last winter homeless living in and out of the car last winter in Vermont.
20-30 below add howling windchill.
It wouldn't start let alone run the heater, or warm up enough to.

My bug is my daily driver up here in North Dakota. We don't use very much salt. But after 6 years, it is starting to show rust around the headlight buckets and a bit at the bottom of the fenders.

I wash the car regularly in the winter at the car wash. Aiming the hose under the car.

It also parks in a heated garage, so all the snow can melt off.

I drove mine in Germany for over 5yrs year round. I washed it at least twice a week. It had some rust when I bought it and I have been slowly fixing it up. Now im in Pennsylvania and they salt the roads alot here to. I have began to look at rust repair as normal maintenance.

You really do need to when you live in the rust belt. Back when I used to live in Ohio, I had a twice-yearly routine where I would put the car up on ramps or jack stands and go over the entire undercarriage, treating any rust with a rust converter then touching up the paint to keep things protected. This was done when things would warm up in the Spring time, then again in the Fall before the cold and salt trucks started to make their rounds.

Around here they rotted in the salt just like any other car from the 60's or 70's. After 10 years they often had holes in the floor pan, rotted door sills, even frame damage.
