I drove 800 miles to Kansas to pick up this 181 I bought. Ash, the former owner, was very hospitable and friendly.
He and his buddies help my partner and me load it onto a trailer, and we are transporting it back to Michigan.
Here are a couple photos. Lots to do...
Having trouble loading the photos : -( _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

Where at in Kansas was the Thing? I'm in Kansas and hoping to pick one up. I guess I'll have to drive 800 miles somewhere else to get it!

It was in lawrence, not far from the university, but it was not a college Thing. The car is complete, has body rust, but came with a complete engine and new extra unused, still-wrapped steel floor pans.Front tires are toast, 14" Ghia rims (four-holes vs 5x205 wide fives).Have not yet checked for disc brakes.Fuel tank removed and clean but apparently had had old gas in it for a while, has the kerosene smell, which I will boil out.
Has a complete heater and a large number of parts, some of which were extra.Have a couple books with the vehicle including a copy of a parts and service manuals both. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace!

I wondered if it was that Thing-I've seen it in the classifieds and on Craigslist a couple times and had thought about trying to take a look at it, but I think I want to find one that will be a driver sooner rather than later. _________________ Dave Cook

According to the owner, it was a driver. He did remove the gas tank to clean it so it was inop when he sold it but it was very complete, engine wise, looked normal . _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

I give up, but I am not as up to date on all these songs and cultural allusions. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

Actually, the title made me think strelnik is awfully strong. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

And swift, too!
But honestly, not that strong.
Have to find pics and include them. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

Since my pics are .png files, they are not allowed, will have to convert. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace!

All right, you uncharitable unbelievers, here are two photos of the car plus a group photo of the family that sold me the Thing in Kansas.

Here she is working progress. Trying to get it back to standard ride height. Been sitting for a while but had a lot of work done to it in the past. Things are fun. _________________ 1972 Bus Camper :motor 74 2.0l

Our various purveyors of Thing parts love it when a car like that is resurrected.
That's going to be pricey to fix up, unless your goal is just to make it road worthy and have fun with it. That's what my first VW thing looked like when I bought it 30 years ago for $300, only I had to first cut down the 5 inch sapling tree growing through the pans and out the top.
A little bit of brake work and basic engine work and I drove it for 3 years. Sold it to a fellow Marine for $900 who drove it from Camp Lejeune NC to Los Angeles CA when he got out of the Marines. (I never called to see if he made it) |
