Trying to track down a clacking sound in my
Type 1. 1914, drd cam etc. Kind of decided it might be a sloppy
Fit between the slot in the cam and the flats
On the driven oil pump gear. Sound possible?
I don't think the wrong pump could be the issue
As i don't believe a dished cam oil pump would
even fit. I did have grind some of the oil pump
to clear the bolt heads that hold the gear to the cam
Sounds quite a bit like valve train noise but all that
looks good

Don't know about the noise but it is possible for the cam and oil pump to get worn big time... mine are.

What oilpump do you have, and what kind of oil do you use?

often a faint clacking is the cam gear teeth wearing, and it's no longer tight in the teeth of the crank gear. Check it. It will often do this with

mag cam gears
woodruff key too tight into the crank (swells the crank, swells the crank gear, which is then no longer round)

And some cheaper cam gears aren't round out of the package.

30mm oil pumps are going to wear faster than smaller ones, since they are under more loading (higher pressure). They are also fairly constantly loaded, so won't make noise like a cam gear, even when severely worn. The tang eventually just spins off and you have no oil pressure.

If a person is using anything larger than a 21/26mm pump, it wouldn't be a bad idea to rent or buy a crank pulley puller and pull the pump every 2nd oil change. The process is simple and gaskets are cheap. Slap the pulley back on with the pump out and you can check by hand how loose the gears mesh. Sure it's a bit overkill, but is it really?

You can use either cam in a 1600 platform as long as you order the correspoding pump. When you read a pump description, it will tell which cam it's for. All aftermarket cams are 3 bolt style.

Decide on a cam first, then buy a pump to match.
