My 97 golf has started to make a fairly loud, annoying noise. Gets worse with increased speed. Sounds as if coming from rear axle. Rt rear wheel if I had to guess but hard to tell exactly. It did this before for some time and went away. Is now back again. Is sort of a loud humming or whirring sound. Any ideas or suggestions on what I should check?

In the words of Cousin Eddy, "Bingo"

Do not drive it much until you fix it, as the inner race can overheat and weld itself to the axle, which makes it a more expensive job, (stub replacement, worst case)

As you drive the vehicle, does the noise change as you turn? If it does then it's probably a bearing, if not, you could possibly have scalloped (or cupped) tires. You can run your hand over the tread & feel if the surface is even or if it has dips the in the tread (will usually be on inner edge). If no abnormalities are detected, jack up the suspected corner & spin the wheel, you should be able to hear the noise, if so, replace the bearings.

Before you run your hand over the tread, make sure there isn't any sharp debris or belts protruding out of the tread.

Also a good time to replace the inner bearing seal.

Replaced all rear wheel bearings today. Was a pain, but it seems to have fixed the problem. I drove the car a short distance and noticed no noise. Thanks for the help.
