|
|
I did a search on these things but couldn't find a definitive answer. On a '63 swing-axle transmission, are O-rings used to seal the one-piece axle tube retainers to the side covers, or is it only the paper gaskets/shims that provide a seal at that point? I seem to remember finding an O-ring along with the shims when I removed the axle tubes from my old transmission, but now I can't find any reference to them being used with the one-piece retainers. The transmission gasket kits only include the large O-rings to seal the side covers to the case, but not the smaller ones needed for the axle tube retainers...not even for the two-piece retainers used with the later-style axle tubes.
Does it make any difference if I use the thin paper gaskets or the thicker paper ones, as long as I get the axle tube end play set correctly?
And finally, what about putting a thin coat of RTV sealer on the axle tube retainer gaskets/shims to insure a good seal if no O-ring is used here? _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

A 63 originally did not use o-rings on the axle tube flanges. They started in late 65.
Use both the thin and thick gaskets until you have the right endplay at the axle tube's bell. You want the tube to articulate up and down with no binding, but at the same time, without excessive play.
Don't use a thin coating of RTV on the axle tube flange gaskets, use LOTS of RTV. _________________

Those paper gaskets are one of the few places I will use, and recommend that others to always use, RTV style sealant on an aircooled VW.
I thought it wasn't until mid-67 that the O-rings were introduced?
