The question has got to be asked, "Where are all these cars today?" Besides Bob's former Heb #258, anyone else know anything about the other cars?

Bob- Any chance Steve Cass attended this gathering? Perhaps with a 1950 sedan?

Bob, what a great memory jog! That first meet was the start of so many other gatherings. Looking at the cars- Gary Longworth green split, Glendora ' s Tommy Tompkins '50 ( the first split I remember ever seeing), the '58 Romesch before it was Phil and Mary Beth Leadly's, you car sans ivory sides. How young Cliff Crate looked. And real fun, you caught a photo of Bob Carmona, Larry Rick and I checking one of the cars.
Times have sure changed along with car owners. Yes, nearly 40 years later, where ARE those cars today? Steve Walker

Great pics & commentary, Bob!

When I started getting involved with vintage VWs in the mid-80's I formed the San Diego Chapter of the VVWCA and organized cruises & meets. Then in 1989 I decided to create a vintage-only VW car show at a local San Diego VW dealership, trying to recreate the scene from the 1950's & 60's. I chose the Bob Baker VW dealership in Carlsbad because I wanted to have a historical lineage back to Bob's 1st meet in 1976. The dealership agreed and the Vintage VW Spring Festival had its first show in 1989. It's been going on every year since then!

Steve, I don't remember seeing your Zwitter there at the meet. For some reason my '52 Split did not show up in any of the photos either. Ivan

Shocked Wow! Bill Neuman is the guy next to the Heb wearing the Blue overalls. Sadly, he passed away in early 2014. But in 2005, I purchased (& still own) his 1947 Beetle. He told me a story of how he and his brother (Gene) wanted the earliest VW they could find. They traded a 1950 sunroof & a pair of Hebs to acquire the '47 from a guy in Idaho. Their adventure was chronicled in a late '70s issue of Hot VWs

Hi notchboy

Yes !! BoB Gilmore here . . .

I use to live in Poway, CA !!

Retired and moved to AZ about 10 years ago !!

Ha I knew it! I was there to at the same time. I grew up down by garden road where the old whiskey creek was. Except in the 70s I was a kid. But growing up vw in that area your name and car was a known fixture. Lee Hedges and I a good friends as well and I've wrenched a few times with Dave Cormak.

The good old days when these cars were driven around and impressed upon like myself when I was young. Now we have to look at th behind glass.

My family moved to the Oak Knoll neighborhood of Poway in 1976 and I got my first VW, a red '65 beetle, a year later. I wish I'd known back then that I was in the middle of so much vintage VW activity!

... of coarse the VVWCA, at the time, consisted of the West coast and East coast chapters...

In May, 1975, in Talcottville, Conn. Bill Collins of Bedford, NH. held the first east coast meet where 12 splits, 2 Hebs and 12 ovals were present.

Then on May 22 & 23, 1976 at Tom Flynn VW was the first meet of the VVWCA in Pittsfield, Mass. by Bill Collins again. My brother, Rick in his 1952 Zwitter and myself in my 1950 11G, drove the 200+ miles to attend from NJ. What a great day it was.
