What ever happened to SplitZine? That great all bus newsletter that Cletus R. in NM put out.

He stopped putting it out, that should clear it up. But wasn't that a little more than over a year ago?

While renewing my subscription to Splitzine a couple of years ago, I tried to pay up for 2 years in advance. Cletus wouldn't do it because he said he didn't know how long he would have the time to continue doing the newsletter. Later I heard he had changed jobs and didn't have as much free time to continue doing it. I miss his sense of humor.

Any idea if Cletus still has that TV repair Kombi? I still have pix of it from the 2000 Classic. Awesome bus!

It's a standard.

Sorry, I see the three windows past the driver's area and typically say Kombi before Standard. Is there any other way to tell just by glancing at the body?

In a word, No, or Maybe....

From vintagebus....

Quote:
Kombi's
Some people mistakenly refer to all buses as "kombis," when actually it's just one of several models. By definition, a "kombi" is a "kombination" of commercial and passenger vehicle, which could be change functionality with the quick removal of the rear seats. It has 3 windows in the sides of the cargo area, and one in the rear hatch. The rear window on a kombi is smaller than that of a deluxe. There were only hardboard panels for interior in the front cab section, covering the doors, roof, and behind the nose. There were no headliner or carpet, and rear seats were optional. Kombis were frequently used as the basis for campers.

Standard
The standard was the entry-level passenger model. It has the same window configuration as a kombi, but with a nicer lever of interior trim and a headliner. Standards usually came in two-tone paint schemes, and had middle and rear seats.

On an original painted bus, you can guess that its a kombi. But on something like that theres no way of telling for sure unless you look inside.

By the way, I see you capitolized my quote.

From my understanding Standards had the two-tone paint whereas Kombis didn't. But I'm not sure.

Yeah, I'm prone to correcting grammar and spelling subtly. As for the Kombi/Standard thing, I guess I'll just have to look closer from now on.

My understanding of a Kombi is the germans felt it was essentially a panel with windows and seats. A very basic and utilitarian vehicle.Seats had wingnuts for quicker removal and mislaying. That is why so many are missing them today! A Standard Microbus is always two tone paint with a headliner and material covered interior panels. Kombis as an option could have interior panels (boards without fabric covering) like a masonite. All standards generally had the Kombi style knobs and vent wing latches and horn button. Westfalia buses painted in two tone paint as an alternative to a solid color were painted in the standard micro colors of the year. Although they were based on a Kombi and had masonite boards and cab ceiling and wood headliner produced by Westfalia.

He bought Bret's old 54 Panel a couple years back. I know he's been collecting stuff for it.
