Here is the Google Maps street view of the two bridges. The centers of the two bridges are 143 feet apart. https://goo.gl/maps/zfPZv
You can see that the mountain ridge in the street view matches the view shown in slide 3 in the MSN article that TrulyVintage linked to. The water came from those mountains that start about 1.2 miles south of the I-10 and rise 2200 feet above the bridges' elevation.
Here is the Earth View of the freeway. The "dry" wash is shown by the red marker. https://goo.gl/maps/94iep The bridges are 2.46 mi west of Desert Center, CA. |

Yeah, I'll be heading that way in about 4 weeks. Most likely a temporary bypass road through the wash will be built quickly once the water stops, to move traffic along, then the real repair will start.
Otherwise, this will severely overload I-8 and I-40 east-west. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Here are numerous photos taken today of the bridge by a Los Angeles Times reporter.
http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-live...story.html
It seems that the bridge collapsed because the rock revetment under and beside the bridge wasn't substantial enough to prevent the rush of water from undermining the bridge. It didn't matter that the bridge was built in 1967 or if it had been built this year. The bridge cleared the wash by only 15 feet and Desert Center received 6.7 inches of rain on Sunday.
The problem wasn't with the bridge design, it was with the revetment design. If the revetment had been tied together with an interlocking structure like you see in some of the photos linked below, then it would have been a different story -- actually no story because the bridge would have held. It seems that the revetment design was a case of 'penny wise, pound foolish'.

On a serious note ....
Unless someone has a better suggestion ...
From personal experience ...
Unless CA & AZ DOT formally officially announce a closer alternate route - if any one is traveling the I-10
between Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ or vice-versa ...
Normally you would go this way @ http://mapq.st/1OiMEWJ
It is better to take either of these routes ...
Since everyone (including heavy trucks) will be looking for a short cut when they hit the detour signs along I-10 ....
You are looking at long delays if there are any shortcuts open .... _________________ Jim is on the road @ http://www.trulyvintagetrailers.citymax.com/trulyvintage-feedback.html |

I was watching a thing on the History Channel about the structures and major bridges in the US. All that we use pass inspection, but the nations average per location is like a D, or D-

I do.
http://mapq.st/1OiTZpn will take you through Twentynine Palms on CA 62.
Coming to LA from Needles, CA, on the Colorado River, I have taken I-40 to Old Route 66 to Amboy Road to Twentynine Palms. I haven't been east of Twentynine Palms but I assume it is a smooth road; it looks like it on this lonely stretch. https://goo.gl/maps/KpnC4 It's not a road you'd want to fall asleep on, that's for sure. It's only 57 miles longer than if I-10 were still open, whereas your southern route past the Salton Sea is 79 miles longer. |

Hey, don't pass that around! I have to drive to SoCal in a few weeks and 62 is my new route to get there.

It was a good road a year ago when I drove it coming back from CA... nary a car on it too. This year, it may be a tad different. _________________ ~Kamz

Yes there are tens of thousands of bridges across the USA that are 50, 60, or 75 years old that have reached their expiration date and need replaced. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Well my fix is this like with any other bridge repair.
Temp road to good functioning bridge on the east bound side. Cross the bridge then back to the west bound road. It has been done lots of time.
You will have two way traffic for about a half mile each direction. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

^^^^^^
That's the solution they will be using. First, they have to shore up the good bridge which was partially undercut by the flash flood. That remaining two-lane bridge won't be serving 27,000 vehicles per day like both bridges together did before. It will still be wise for many people to use an alternate route during peak hours after the one bridge re-opens.
Quote from the linked story: "Work crews plan to shore up the westbound span within several weeks and eastbound traffic could then use one of the bridge's two lanes."

Years ago we would take the 62 to 29 Palms and then go to Amboy to catch the 40 to hit the river. There used to be a hand written sign when you topped Sheep Hole Summit (Google it--I don't make this s**t up) that said "No Cops--Go For It." There weren't and we did--as much as we could towing a boat. |

My son-in-law just came back from a two week Marine Reserve training stint in 29 Palms. Not a palm tree to be seen. And nothing that lives there besides crows and cockroaches. The legend is that it was an Army property and the Army abandoned it as being uninhabitable, at which point the Marines stepped up and took it over. But that sounds like the Marine version of things! _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Just don't use the LA Times' suggested detours. One of them has you taking Interstate 95 to get around the closure. I'm sure that would work but it's just 3000 miles out of your way. You would think their copy editors would know U.S. 95 from I-95 but they are basically morons. |

Not true.
It was a navy auxiliary air station in the 40's during WWII. Then became a marine base in the early 50's. It was never an army base. |

A person must always make it a point to stop at Roy's in Amboy and enjoy a cold Root Beer. |

The high temp in Amboy for Saturday is going to be 106°. There are only two reasons I would drive the 180 miles there and that would be if Ksenia handed me that cold root beer and then took me for a ride.

I will pass that along to my son-in-law. Funny how a story evolves as it gets told by one person to the next. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Yeah. I remember in elementary school one time the entire class lined up. The teacher told the first student something and by the time it got to the last student it was completely different.
I'm sure your son will agree will this, 29 Palms is horrible. Is he deploying to Afghanistan? I only ask cause that's where marines train before they deploy cause it's damn similar to Iraq and Afghanistan. Or does he live down there and just got stuck there for his 2 week a year thing? |
