|
|
Hey All,
I am considering jumping into the type 3 scene and getting a fastback.
I just had some questions
I was reading that putting an air conditioner unit on the engine makes it run hotter, which makes a lot of sense, But i was wondering if you could counter act the heat by using a external oil cooler? I know the stock cooler is the best you can get and working amazing but I was wondering if with a air con unit it might need a little help considering it wasn't designed with air con in mind?
Any thoughts?
Thanks! _________________ 1978 VW Deluxe 2000cc FI

If the aircon is done correctly and the engine is healthy it won't be an issue. you will notice a slight power drop when using the A/C but that's the price of glory.
I installed A/C on Rick Christensen's 1965 Notch and that engine has an oil temp gauge on it with no mods to the lubrication system and that engine runs very cool. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

That install thread was awesome Ron!
So, In the hot Arizona Summers I shouldn't have much to worry about as long as I take care of the engine and keep it well tuned? (sounds like a dumb question) _________________ 1978 VW Deluxe 2000cc FI

The only bummer about it is that the Sanden compressor won't work with the OE air filter. That might not seem like a huge deal, but my beef with aftermarket air filters is that, by design, the original setup will supply the fuel system with cool air- but aftermarket air cleaners will not. Especially in Israel (or anywhere hot like that) I would be way more leery of having the system sucking hot air than I would adding A/C. The engineers designed the intake that way on a Type 3 for a specific reason. Other Types will suck cool air without that duct because the entire upper part of the engine is isolated from the exhaust heat. That's the difference, and that's why aftermarket air cleaners on other Types don't create the problem of hot air in the intake that they create on Type 3. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Tram
i wish i could go back to the original carb set up.
i have the sandan on my type 1 end 3 on a very hot day 86f
after driving 38 mile, only whan i stop the car the red oil light starts to flash.
olso on the type 1-3 i use oil 15-40. when i push the gas pedal the rpm rise end the red oil light stop to flash.
its time for a oil temp gauge.

Ron: The oil light coming on on a hot day after a highway run is normal. As long as it goes out as soon as you give it throttle, it is OK.

This note about the oil light at idle was issued as a supplement to be pasted into earlier owner's manuals by dealer service departments.
It can often be rectified by adding one or two 3mm thick copper washers to the pressure relief valve as a shim under the spring on top of the plug or on top of the spring under the plunger. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Unless it gets worse when you push in the clutch pedal! |
