Tried to make a simple bearing puller today as Haynes diagram but very frustrated and not working.
Any tips on removing rear wheel bearings and also safely re-installing new bearings.
Thanks |

I once borrowed a genuine VW tool from an ex vw mechanic, it made rear bearings so easy to remove, unfortunately I had to return it! The only way I have found is to tap the axle inwards with a mallet and then work the bearing off slowly. _________________ '51 Beetle Deluxe

ok thanks, i can see small gap between bearing and the rear plate - should the bearing be seated in the rear part / plate, maybe pulls into on torque of castle nut ? |

Yes, this is how I did it also... noticed that the local parts store lends tools, including a few different pullers... have not inquired.
This method does work. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Pull the splined axle shaft out using your hand. It should slide out 1/4" or so.
Get yourself this style of vice grips:
Clamp it around the outer race of the bearing and tight as you can and against the casting lip.
Put the axle nut on upside down and use a soft brass or similar hammer to drive the axle shaft back in towards the tranny. This should cause the bearing to be forced further off the axle shaft.
Repeat as many times as needed until you can get a proper puller on it, or it comes off. |

The only way I have ever changed those bearings is with the proper puller. Since you don't have one, you could probably tack weld a piece of metal, or tubing, to the bearing and pull it out with a slide hammer. Or you could try grinding two notches in the outer race that would allow a two fingered puller to grab it. Just a few ideas, good luck. _________________ Independent German Auto

Hey Roger,
I don't have a factory tool, but I used this last time. Worked a treat.
*Note - it does ruin the bearing you are removing, as you have to drill the cage to use the tool.

I think I got it from Bearing Wholesalers in Bayswater.
Most bearing place should have them. _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )
