I have a 71 super beetle that I bought about a week ago knowing that it may not run. Put in a new battery, new gas in the tank and it does turn over but that's it. Poured a little gas down the carb but still nothing. I did notice a leak at the fuel pump so I stopped right there. Is it a fuel issue or possibly a points and condenser issue? Any help greatly appreciated. |

I also noticed the butterfly on the carb is staying open all the time. |

You're gonna have to find out and then let us know!
The fact that you don't even get a stumble when you put a little gas down the carb throat would in my mind tend to suggest you don't have spark.
But you have to repair your leaky fuel pump before you proceed anyway.
Verify correct point gap, verify you're getting spark at the plugs, static time it so you at least have the timing in the ballpark so it's good enough to start and run even if it's not dead on.
Regarding the carb butterfly, I'll presume you're speaking about the butterfly at the top of the carb throat which is the choke plate. It should still start and run if the choke is not working. Now if you're talking about the actual throttle plate (the one lower in the carb that the accelerator cable hooks to) then you got a problem. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Get the John Muir's book "How to keep your Volkswagen alive for the complete idiot." It has a good section on diagnosing a non-running car. And many other useful hints for the complete novice. |

Thanks for the help. Today I found a broken wire that goes to the coil and fixed that. Next I seen a fuse holder that goes to the coil but cannot find what it attaches to or where it goes. I see the spade connector but no sign of a wire anywhere. Also the fuse is blown, can you still buy those ceramic fuses that go into the car? There is also something mounted to the left of the coil on the firewall that connects to the vacuum on the distributor. Can anyone tell me what this is. I will try and post pics as soon as I can but any help in the mean time would be great. |

There are a couple things that should be connected to the coil. On the + terminal of the coil you should have the wire that comes in from the ignition switch to power the coil and you should also have a wire that runs from there to the electromagnetic cutoff valve on the carb (if you have one) and onto the choke. The other thing that should be connected to that terminal on the coil is the wire that powers the backup lights - that's the one with the fuse holder. The wire runs from the coil to the backup light switch on the transmission and then another wire runs from there back to the lights. Yes you can still get the fuses.
On the negative side of the coil you should have the wire that goes to the condenser.
The vacuum device on the firewall is I believe an emissions control device from back in the day. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Review and run the tests suggested by Speedy Jim in the below link...

Don't skip anything and you will isolate where the problem is. _________________ AshMan40

I just looked at your gallery photos, yes that wire is for your reverse lights and the post above about that thing to the left being a throttle position sensor is correct. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.
