Just started experiencing this problem with my golf 2.0 5 speed manual. It is very hard to get car into 5th gear. It makes a sort of grinding noise and is very difficult. No problem with any other gear at this point. Any suggestions as to what this may be or what I can do?

Check gear lube level. May be too late.

If you jiggle the shifter with the engine off, do you hear a metallic jingle or clanking? If so you need a shifter bushing kit, this can make certain gears hard to find/get into. You may have a bad fifth gear, they are usually the first to fail if the gear lube gets low, check the level. Fifth can be replaced without removing the trans, but depending on how bad it's chewed up, all those pieces find their way into the rest of the trans.
