To tell you truth I couldn't feel any difference on my vintage speed motor, from homemade "Abarth" to real Abarth and back to homemade, the only and real way to tell was to have the car dynoed my car with both exhausts, but I hadn't the opportunity to do that.

Yes, I'm going to try to find a garage here in Winter Haven who can Dyno my car BEFORE I put the old ABARTH on there, see really if there's any difference in HP?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far on this page, lot's of very kool sports exhaust systems were made for VW's in the 1950's, 60's and 70's.

There's a German 4 tip Sports Muffler made by Ernst (Hagen, Germany) ca. 1955 to 1960 ~ The company made stock mufflers for all model years 25/36/40 hp a well, etc.etc. and the company is still going strong today...... Very Happy

Close up of the black (baked on) wrinkle finish on that 1960 36HP ABARTH exhaust.

I'm wondering if that finish can be reproduced? Or maybe as in a pattern with a ceramic finish?

Out of the box and just laid on the floor, the muffler metal is pretty stable, I think it will take to a fine blasting ok, I'm digging on the patina'd chrome tips, so I think I will leave them as is, just restore the muffler body/chamber and pipes and then mount, have to send away to Europe to get some original "A" clamps but it's worth the wait, I'm not going to skimp here.

I also want to try to get Blauchen dyno'd BEFORE I put the muffler on him, that way I can finally prove if the original ABARTH ads were just BS or if they really did add 25% extra horsepower (ca. 3/4 HP).

I think it will be great to get a before/after dyno reading.

Did the ads you saw say 25% or 3-4HP?
My math tells me 25% is not 3-4HP:
25HP x .25 = 6.25HP
36HP x .25 = 9HP

Ohh the ads said 25% and some collectors have told me 3/4 hp and NOW with the math 9hp? WOW!.......I say there's no way you gain that much, but ohh you never know? Wink

I REALLY need to find a garage in Winter Haven that can dyno test, so far, no luck.

Pretty kool stuff there, I see those ads are from the same era as my muffler. Very Happy

I did take my original wrinkle finish off of my Stebro Exhaust (Pix in above post) and did a new wrinkle finish. The overall issue is that most of those type of finishes I found have to be baked on...not too easy for most of us at the "Home Shop" level...and my wife doesn't want a muffler in the house oven!...Imagine that....

I was fortunate in that I have a double door stainless smoker which is propane powered. The exhaust nicely in the smoker hung by coat hangers bent to size...and has room to spare. I took out the shelves and cranked the smoker to around 550 degrees F to cure the product sprayed on the surface. It's a little dicey getting the wet product in without touching the new soft finish on the sides of the smoker. Don't run the heat while curing as you might get a whitish type finish vs. almost pure black as expected...this is what I have read, not experienced....

The wrinkle finish turned out pretty well. I suspect that once these get to temp on our bugs at the height of summer heat, the finish will burn right off...at least that is what i have heard. I had to do a resto on the Stebro because the NOS OG finish was showing it's age.

Either way the experience was fulfilling, I got to spray paint and the Stebro deserved the best treatment I could provide. I try to respect all these rare parts as we are really just caretakers of the whole show, today. Maybe somebody down the line in forty years will benefit from us Dub guys caring for our stuff.
