I've got a 1970 standard beetle on its way to becoming a baja style, that's a different story though.

I was wondering if anybody is doing anything high tech for their interior. For example led lighting, gps speedomter, in dash touchscreen, or anything else out of the ordinary they want to share.

I've done some research and found ways to turn all these analog signals into digital to connect to things like phones and tablets.

I was just curious what other people were doing so I might get some ideas.

Wow, a touchscreen is confusing and distracting enough on modern day cars with all their safety features. I can just imagine what kinds of wrecks and injuries it will lead to in a bug, not to mention the number of times you're going to hit the wrong button because of the chaotic ride. I thought trying to insert a cd was bad...

Just finished wiring up Xtron DH Series 7"touch screen 1 Din multi media unit with reverse camera and DVR camera, Also DVD/VCD/CD/MP4/MP3/USB, blutooth,3.5mm socket and iphone going through 3800watt Pyle amp with 2x1000 sub woofers, 4 x 300 dual cone speakers.

Figured that blind spots rearward are dangerous and other road users see these old VW's (or any old classic car) and immediately try and cut you off so as they don't get held up "by that old clunker."DVR camera can record their idiot driving and be given to police and insurance companies.

Also use LED bulbs in indicators.

Sounds pretty cool. Can u post a pic of how it's installed.

I have cheap Pyle stereo, but it has Bluetooth, an SD card slot, a USB port AND hands free calling and texting when connected to my phone. Not bad for $65 bucks... That said, having it in the glove compartment kinda kills the value of the built-in mike.

Me too. Mines not hooked up though. It just plugs the radio hole.

The beauty of making it myself, is that I can tailor it to suit my needs and not be confusing and distracting.

Will take a photo tomorrow and post it, currently snowing.

I got my amp and sub woofers from the USA, the rest from Hong Kong.

Prices here in Australia are outrageous.

LED SMD lighting inside and out. I agree with the comment about keeping the overall simplicity lol.

I must agree, when I'm in the Type1, it's about driving it and not anything else. The radio is as "hi-tech" as I need to go. Although it does have a cassette player, that hasn't been used in two decades, not sure if it would still work. Did I mention the radio does have FM stereo?

I have a CD player in the bug, but I've told my son that because it's an old car only the Beatles and CSNY will play in it.

I think I can pull that off for a little longer anyway.

The only thing high-tech about my Bug at the moment, like others, is that I've added a decent Sony stereo with MP3 CD reader, an iPod dock, and a Sirius tuner. (oooohhhh, ahhhhhhhh)

I'm working on designing a "driver information system" reminiscent of the early FIS clusters that appeared on VWs in the late 90s with the big LCD in the cluster that should display status messages and warning icons. I was going to use a small LCD panel to display information (door open, low oil pressure, outside temperature, etc) but my original plan during design was to use a vacuum-fluorescent display. To keep the system appearing period-correct, I've decided to continue with a VFD, and the project is on hold until I can find an appropriate display.

That's about as high-tech as I'm going to go.

Eh, I see where you guys are coming from, but its not like I am putting this into a split.

The main functionality I am wanting out of it is monitoring stats like temperatures, pressure, speed, acceleration etc. Logging said stats. Controlling the dashcams I will install alongside it. And controlling my music.

Thats almost all utility so that if I get nailed by some asshole on the road, I have undeniable proof of what I was doing at the time.

The only "convenience" is the built in music player I want. But I find modern radios complicated, and touch screens much simpler.

Jordan; go nuts, it would be cool to see. I'd love to see some creativity at a car show. Soooo sick of 'patina'

seems like all anyone does these days is wax on top of rust and bitch anytime someone wants to change taillight lenses.

My comment was just about my car, not a criticism of yours. I really miss all the weird stuff we had going in the 80s. I'm just too lazy to do anything about it.
