Cruzing North on the 101 in 4th gear and the transmission popped out of gear and now will not engage in any gear. Unable to drive vehicle. Need either help, guidance on repair or reference to a nearby shop. Hurry thanks! Email:[email protected]

Have you looked at the Vanagon Rescue Squad app yet? Do you have AAA premium (200 miles free towing)?

take a look under neath back bythe Pass side of the transmission where the linkage hooks to the transmission. it can come loose there and you'll lose all gears
if that nut fell off on the highway you can steal one from another location to get it back together temporarily

I hope you like cheese.

Listen carefully while trying to get it into gear & post the sounds you hear.

indeed, the last one I read here like this had blown his clutch disc apart..
his story, maybe similiar to yours? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=629605

so when you say it doesn't go into any gears.
does it go in if the engine is off?
grinding?
silence?
whirrring noise?

Linkage is good. No noises. Feels like it goes into gear but does nothing.

Just curious with the engine off and you shift it into gear can you roll the vehicle or is there no engagement to prevent you from rolling?

It's not going to explain why it "popped" out of gear, but it will confirm the gears are still there and engine off maybe you can hear if the clutch plate is making noise as the shaft rotates the clutch disc.

are you solo? Can you verify linkage is moving? when you turn the starter does the van jump?

OK so check that both drive axles are fully bolted on. it's not uncommon at all for CV bolts to loosen in a short while after having transaxle or axle work done.. it just takes one to pop out and then you'll no go with an non-locking differential.
set brake crawl under and grab them and see if one is loose on the inside or outside.
good thing your wife is there to watch the baby so you can focus on diagnosing what is wrong with the van..

Yes, Bandon is great!

My wife, baby and I just spent a week there!

I would just have the van towed to a spot with an ocean view and start a new life. Get a job and live in Bandon!

I'm sorry that you are stuck! If I was still there, I would come over and stare at it with you.

Yeah, I am 13 miles South of Bandon but don't know anything about Vanagon's, Sounds pretty serious! I had a Porsche 356 do that once in 2 gears only though. So I knew for sure it was the trans, But all of them! I would suspect the clutch or throw out. Can you put it in gear stopped shut off and then start it and drive it that way? If so the trans is probably ok and it's the clutch or throwout or something with the clutch hydraulics, Does it have a hydraulic slave and master cylinder or is it a cable? Could be out of brake fluid.
Bandon had a VW guy but he retired. Coos Bay just lost Marty he closed his business "Second Street" and moved away. There was a place in Port Orford across the street from "Kar Kare" an Auto Parts store, Not sure if there still open, Here is the info for Kar Kare maybe they know: http://www.yellowpages.com/port-orford-or/mip/kar-kare-auto-parts-8753570?lid=8753570 I'm in the town of "Langlois" Oregon it's just 13 miles South of Bandon but Port Orford is another 13 miles South of me.

I'm pretty sure its sudden vanagon death syndrome. 3-4 hub most likely exploded.

Did you re-gear when the TDI was installed?

Now sounds like it does go into gear right? But You put a Kennedy Stage 2 Clutch in it which is probably too strong so the throw-out fork broke or something in the clutch broke, Yeah, something broke could be the input, If it were the hub then you should see the axle spin right? I have to go do some work but will be back here in a couple of hours.

No one around can or will work on it. We are going to rent a truck and dolly and tow it home. Wife wants to sell the van now. Sad

See if you can get ahold of Bman. He's in that area and may know more:
