|
|
A while back I had the driver seat in my 64 walk through reupholstered. They did a good job on the appearance, but told me that eventually I'm going to have to replace the coil springs in the seat.
Never occurred to me that they could wear out. Is there a kit or something for this? _________________ "Honesty hath no fence against superior cunning" |

If you google no-sag zig zag springs you will find them for sale. I don't know what size are original but i'm sure you will be able to find something close. They even sell the clips to attach the springs to the frame. I will be attempting the same repair to some front bug seats at some point.
Hope that helps |

Coil springs were the type mentioned by the upholstery shop. The fact that she zeroed in on them needing replacement, but not offering the service, makes me think that they're a whole different problem. _________________ "Honesty hath no fence against superior cunning" |

I thought about this some more and the door-side edge of those seat bases have the larger & thicker coil springs.
They can be seen on the right side of this seat base photo:
I wonder if those are what was broken?
I have seen those broken before, they get a lot of bouncing wear from getting in & out of the Bus.
Coil springs are available but I'm not sure if those exact size & dimension thick coil springs are available anywhere - you may have to rob them from another junk seat base that has some good ones. _________________ How to Post Photos

I think they are just saying that after a lot of butt-time up-and-down can fatigue spring material to snap or simply wear through from rubbing. Most all seats with lots of hours on them will show radical chaffing where the springs' coils interweave and cross each other: impossible to lubricate so replacement is in the future.
Replace the whole bottom with a low hours bottom is best. The larger corner springs can be woven in but what a hassle. |

It is more usual to have some broken springs than for them to be all intact.
W/t buses get them broken on both sides, bench seat they tend to be broken just on the door side.
Buses driven by larger people tend to have more broken springs.
Broken springs should be replaced before the covers are installed. This makes the seat more comfortable. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |
