I pulled a november 1961 15 Windows bus out of the Norwegian Woods a few years ago. The bus had been sitting there since the mid-seventies, so bits and pieces has been removed, but it is restorable. The biggest issue is that both m-plate and vin plate is removed, and the section With the vin nr is rusted out. The number on the front beam (817588) tells it is an early november 1961, but I know nothing more than that.
Is there anyone here With a november 61 bus With both beam nr, vin nr and date of Production, so that I can try to figure out approximately what my vin nr is? If i can narrow it to a small series of numbers, then i can get the dmv to search after it, right now they are a bit tired of me sending them random numbers starting With 85xxxx....
All help appreciated!!!

Nice rescue Smile
The number stamped on the transmission may help you narrow it down more as well.

Well, I dont have many exciting pics from the rescue. The big bad yellow machine made it quite easy to remove it from the place where it had been sitting for all those years. Lots of thanks to the gentleman in the drivers cabin for lending us his machine and helping us there.
Got a Picture of it as found.

Another one when we started to lift it.

The last one as it sits now, after washing it With a high pressure steamer.

The idea is to keep the body mostly as it is, and replace the rusted out frame. Received the front floor and some other metal parts today, and I think they were the last pieces of the Puzzle. So, I Guess it is time to start the fun pretty soon....

Ok, numbers from one car so far. It is a doublecab made 15 November, vin.nr 865xxx, beam nr. 824324.
First vin.nr in november is 850334, last one 871303.
First beam nr is 816228, last one 829135.
There was roughly 21000 cars made, and 13000 beams numbered....
Does anyone have an idea why 8000 cars had unnumbered beams?
Something to do With Foreign Production vehicles?
Maybe only the German made had a number on the beam?

All help appreciated and needed.....

I have an October 1961 single cab. I've never tried to find the beam #, where would I look?

I thought of checking Progressive Refinements at http://www.oacdp.org/
There is only one bus data point for Nov 1961

3 Nov 1961 - bus VIN 851 390 had beam 818 037.

The last bus buildt in October 1961 was VIN 850 333 with beam 816 227

There are 1057 VINs between the two VINs, and 1810 beams between the two beam # that went with them. So either they put some beams aside for spares, and/or these were not always sequential.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much Very Happy That very useful information could have solved this, if I am lucky. My beam is 449 earlier than the 818037. So, vin nr.851390-449=850940. I sent a request to the DMV and asked if they could search the old archives on anything in the vin series 850930-851030.
Today I received a mail with a copy of a registration card on a 1962 VW with vin nr 851018, and registration nr U4382.
Now I am sending mails to a few of the local DMVs to see if they can find anything on that reg.nr. And if they find anything that can tie it to the late owner or his District, well, then my search is over and I am very happy.

It gets even better. Received a mail from the DMV of Trondheim which confirms it as a Type 2, 241 Zamba (typed with a Z). It spent its first years as a taxi, allowed to carry 13 children up to 15 years of age, or 8 adults! Imported to Norway 14 November 1961. Got the name of the first owner, and the dealership where he traded it in for a new one in december 1965.

Sweet! Does this mean you can get the paperwork ironed out? Will you be driving it soon? Isn't a corner window bus a beautiful thing? Maybe I will start calling them "Zamba"s. Any old pictures of it with logos in the local newspaper archives? Or that the original owner has?

Wasn't there a famous smith from Trondheim?
