No soldering necessary! Is the new moulding German or Brazilian made? Did you purchase new GERMAN replacement clips?

vwnut1,
Thanks for responding, Actually I have no idea if they are German or Brazilian. Clips and molding kit was in package that came with car when I purchased car there were a lot of "extras" some old and some new. Just getting around to putting them on, and found that problem...didn't know exactly how to get around it. Sorry Love VW's just am a newbie at restoration...trying to do it all myself All I know is I seen Stainless Steel on the package and the correct year for the car "63.. Thanks for any help.

The clips slide in the molding, you have to position them into the grommet on the hood one at a time and work your way from top to bottom...

Do you have the rubber grommets inserted into holes in the hood?

Yes I do have the rubber grommets, and I have done all the other moldings on the car with no problem. This one however on each end where the clips would go, they fall out of the molding, like the molding just reaches the hole from the handle in the hood to the hole before the emblem on the top of the hood, and you have to place the clips at the very end, but they do not have the over hang on the molding to hold them in..... hard to explain I guess unless you have experienced it or I am not using the correct terminology...

Could it be that the moulding is the shorter earlier one for cars with a hood crest above the handle? That might explain why the ends are "open" so the clips won't stay in..... ???

Just a thought

Without seeing a photo I would say that your new SS hood moulding is defective and would contact the retailer for a replacement. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for all the input, and I was thinking the same thing on the shortness of it, and did call a couple distributors that sell these, and seemed that what I had was the correct size. So went to a local body shop just to see if there was a suggestion I had not thought of, and there was, and I was not sure I wanted to do it, but I did and it worked just fine. I placed molding on car and took measurements to where the "clip" would still clip into the molding, and just drilled a new hole there, which was just under the original hole, I did this on top and bottom hole only. That way the ending of the chrome molding still went over the original holes and I put the rubber grommets in the holes also to keep rain out. Didn't really want to do it this way, but it worked fine and put a smile on my face! Its nice to get something done been working on this for about 6 years now. Work in progress. Thanks for the help.

I would have loved to see pictures, I've installed hood trim on all 7 rebuilds I have done. At the ends of the molding, there should be a small area without a "lip" so that you can slide the clips into the molding. Yes, the clips move freely back and forth once under that lip. You then carefully slide the clips one at a time starting at the top (or bottom) to the position of the grommet and push it in...then slide the next clip into position and push it in the grommet...repeat until done.

Is it an after market hood? Maybe the holes are in the wrong place?

Glad you got it done though

"lip" that's the word I was looking for! I am sure this is an original hood to the car. Not sure where the trim was from was just purchased along with the car. Like I said all other trim went in perfect. the hood trim overlapped the top and bottom holes just 1/16 inch, so with no lip at each end of the trim for about an inch, I had no idea how else to get this on. Not the best way, but for me, it worked and the closer I get to getting this all done to drive I am happy.

Does anyone know where I can get quality hood molding clips for a 66?I see that WW sells a kit with 36 but I only need the hood clips.
Have I missed the "hood molding clip kit"? I know that they are generally a good company to do business with and the things they sell have always been a good fit. I just don't need that many clips. Thanks for any info

Doubt you are going to find anyone that sells them individually.

I had to read this twice to make sure I wasn't witness to the cheapest beetle guy ever. Turns out I am.
