|

Hey Fellas!! I know that jetting for 48IDA carbs over the internet is not the way forward, but I was wondering if with the experience you have or those that have 2387cc motor with 48 IDAs.
You could give me the most popular jetting sizes for 48 IDAs with 3rd progression hole, F7 emulsion tube 160 and the idle jet 70 and 120. Street/strip 2387cc. Tropical weather with 20 to 400 feet above sea level. I'd start the timing at idle to start at 8 degrees BTDC. 10 to 1 static compression. 2inch Merged Header System
Going in a Dune Buggy.
But here is my engine specs.
86mm forged crank and flywheel wedge-mated
94mm pistons w/ valve pockets
webcam 226 camshaft
226 webcam has a 304º 278º 0.610" 15.49 108º
webcam lifters
straight cut gears
CB 5.7 H-beam rods
1.4 ratio rocker arms
Superflow heads w/ 44 x 37.5, Match ported Manifold. Ported heads.
High volume full flow oil pump 30mm
Aluminum case w/ center shuffle pins
racer spacer
Berg valve cover adapters
Chromoly push rods
Chromoly head studs(1/2 in longer)
Scat spring loaded push-rod tubes (would prefer JayCee's)
Hardned lash caps
JC long barrels
.060 copper head shims
Thanks!! _________________ AH TIYAD AH DAT DEH BAI!!!

I'm running 60/110 165/200 40 vents and f2s. This should be very close starting point. The difference will be your vents and alternatively your mains. I love your rims. Careful with the scat spring tubes. I couldn't get them not to leak. Spring for the jaycees. Do it right the first time or get empi SS Windage tubes. Make sure you hold on to your hair and buckle up. That thing is so light with that much motor, you're going to the moon sir. A wheelie bar might be a good idea too w/ lights... _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

Thanks a lot for the response jfats808. I do appreciate the kind comments. I can definitely try that 60/110 165/200 40 vents and f2s set up. & see how that works out. Also.. Jaycee spring loaded tube I will get for sure. I'm just learning the 48IDAs also this is my first big motor. It was built in 2009 but I never ran it. Just getting couple more parts for it first start up in a month or so. _________________ AH TIYAD AH DAT DEH BAI!!!

With the 3rd progression hole, I'd say you probably could stick with a 55 or 60 idle jet.
I ran 65 idles myself, but that's with E85 (requires ~35% more fuel)
IIRC the "rule of thumb" is 4.1-4.3x venturi size for main jet, so I'd say 165-170 mains should be a good start, but every engine is different. |

Keep an eye on your valve train and guides! The Web 226 is a violent, pointy camshaft.
I tried using it for two years and then yanked it out. I couldn't find very many who had experience with it (when I decided to try it), but after posting my poor results, others contacted me with similar experiences.
I echo the jetting comments above...I switched from F7 to F2 and got a smoother driving experience with the larger vents. _________________ Neil.

Neil68 thanks for your suggestions regarding the Web 226. You said it was violent. In what kind of way? I thought it would be kind of similar to a FK8. _________________ AH TIYAD AH DAT DEH BAI!!!

I've also used the FK8. It's a much smoother cam that is a nice street cam with some racing capability when you want to accelerate.
Engle FK8: 258 deg (0.050"), 298 deg running, 0.382" lift (lobe), smooth lobe.
Web 226: 278 deg (0.050"), 304 deg running, 0.407" lift (lobe), pointy lobe. _________________ Neil.

I have it from here - this article really helped me to dial in my carbs. Nice read.
http://www.aircooled.net/vw-carburetors-jetting-102/
My carbs on normal petrol (99 octane) needed 185 main jets (44mm venturi * 4.3 = 185). And that worked perfectly - the AFR on the Wideband gauge was spot on. Think I ended on 225 for E85, but that's another story, as E85 requires more fuel. |

Sorry I thought it's clear since I asked about idle holder . Lean at idle. Before transition. I can cover the tiny bit of hesitation if I go 120/65 idles but too rich. _________________ 74 super beetle

Good info fellas.. I got one more Question... Can a Part# 2008 Magnaspark II distributor works with a 6AL Digital MSD Box?? CB is out of the 2007 Magnspark II Distributor.
Thanks.. _________________ AH TIYAD AH DAT DEH BAI!!!

Hi CB no longer will stock the 2007, only the 2008, yes you can run the 2008 directly to any CD box, the wire that went to the negative side of a coil from the 2008 will go to the points trigger input on the CD box.
Or alternatively you can remove the igniter module from the CB 2008 Distributor and you will have a straight magnetic pickup which was the CB 2007. ( the wire with the orange stripe from the magnetic pickup is the positive )
I would probably wire it as a 2008, that way if your CD box ever craps out its easy to go back to direct to coil.

Thanks alot Kroc. I guess I will get the #2008 from CB. I was leaning on just getting the good ole 8485 MSD Distributor & call it a day. But that thing is still kinda pricey. But I just want to plug n play style of Dizzy to the 6AL Digital MSD Box. _________________ AH TIYAD AH DAT DEH BAI!!!
