Your A pillar looks so rusty that the doors are probably going to have to come off. Use a big #4 Phillips head bit on your ratchet w/extension to get the Phillips head door bolts out without stripping them! Do you have a welder with gas shielding? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Use a propane torch to warm it up, then a scraper to scrape it off. Easiest way I've found. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Welcome to the community. Looks like you have your hands full BUT don’t be discouraged. It looks like you’ve found pretty much all the issues the car may have. The one recommendation I can give you in tackling what you have in front of you is to ask yourself what are you want to get out of the car. Driver, resto-mod, show, .etc, the car is yours and you make it what you want it to be. Develop a plan or ID milestones to work towards so you don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of work you’re going to be investing into the car. Think about how you’re going to deal with the areas of the car that need attention AND do some research as there are a lot of members on here that have dealt with some of those issues you’re looking at, myself included. I’m no expert and my way is not the only way to go about fixing the issues. To me it looks like a body off job but to others it may seem different. I say this as the corners and rear cargo area as well as the rocker, foot-well and pan are going to need to be given the attention it needs.
Take a look at my 67 thread to give you some ideas on how I deal with some of the issues. Will be watching this rebuild. _________________ MonT3

Your local welder could weld in anything you bring him or patches you guys fab up from scratch. Keep it running, driving, rolling until it breaks & then fix it! Do get the heaters working for you & the wife! Brush on MasterSeriesct.com silver & black on the pans & chassis before you put the seats back in it. The only thing you Have to replace now are the original fabric covered fuel lines as they will spring pinhole leaks! You guys can get in over your head & freak out in body-off restorations! You & your wife will Cruz This year if you want to? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

X2 ^^^ My 70 had rust in the same areas and I thought the fix could be done with the body on, but soon realized its actually much easier to do allot of things with it off. Removal from the pan is not difficult, you just need space and time. Take it one step at a time and before you know it you'll have a great clean ride! _________________ Cheers, David

Your 73 should alreadt have a "freeway flier" trans in it. 73 was the 1st year they got installed in type 3s (along with other models).
With the amount of rust you have to fix, I'd do a "body off", and build a cart to support the body like Monte did. It'll make life easier in the long run. Keep in mind that you're going to want to add some bracing before you get too far.
Depending on the size of your garage, you can get the chill out of it with a 50,000 btu propane fired ready heater. That's what I use in my 24 by 24 garage, and I'm about 150 miles north of you.
Take a look at the 71 Notch build in my signature, as that car was the rustiest car I've rebuilt to date. There's more pics in my gallery too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'm patching this year....no body coming off until my shop gets built.
Taking more paint off...then body work
Need to clean it up before metal goes in
PO did a lot of patching. .. He just didn't do in engine bay and all heating elements/channels inside.
POR and epoxy primer ... tons of grinding first. Just letting you guys know.

Keep after it, sir! I'm currently knee-deep in a lot of the work you are and will be heading into soon. Take on small tasks at a time to keep from being overwhelmed and you'll get there just fine. |

It's just real hard to swallow these high prices for generic parts. I'm just a cheap azz were possible. For example: I had some stainless steel drywall tools..so I'm cutting them up for patch metal. The rockers, and driver door will get structural steel from a job in 05'...lol.
Don't get me wrong ..The car will work and function excellent, have quality paint, motor rebuilt, tranny rebuilt, brakes, and a top of the line wire harness from Street Works.
I just gotta cut where I can "safety first"
Hopefully, I don't offend any here ? You will get pure honesty, and gladly except criticizim.

On the 71 Notch in my signature, I cut up a Ghia engine cover to use to make my corner pieces. I have a real bad habit of "re-purposing" things with "correct shapes". If it's real close to what I need, I'll use it. My Geo Prizm got rear fender arches from a Chevy van because the shapes were very similar. Bottom outer skins of both doors came from a Chevy pick up truck. In fact back when I originally built my Square Vert, I used a hood off a Chevy Beretta. I cut up sections of bug floor to rebuild the rear deck area of my T-34 Ghia.
I look at shapes, and then scrounge around to see what might work to do a job. If I can't find something, then it either gets made out of multiple pieces, or I buy it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

That dissimilar stainless steel is a waste of time/effort. Buy squares of new 18 & 20 gauge steel to cut, hammer, weld with or a used hood etc like Bobnotch does. A couple ball-peen hammers & a sand bag for corners/curves.
