|
|
This is my first cross country bus trip, now that I am retired and being paid for not going in to work 5 days a week. It'll be nice to travel without a time constraint other than being back home in early November. I plan to roll out of Georgia August 30th and have budgeted 10 weeks for this trip.
I post this seeking "driveway camping" opportunities along my route among the Samba Bay Window Bus Forum faithful. I have been dreaming and preparing for this trip most of 5 years, and planning my route nearly a year now. The fresh engine has about 1200 regional miles on it now since late June and it is behaving nicely. Tools, spare parts, maintenance items done and all the essentials are in their normal places and the bus is good to go.
The route; basically parallel I-40 once I cut across northern Alabama and northeastern Mississippi. I will avoid interstates as much as possible by following U.S. and State routes. Once out of Memphis I will travel U.S. 70 to Littlerock Arkansas then Arkansas 10 to Fort Smith. Out of Fort Smith I plan to follow Oklahoma 9 to the OKC area and my first visit with a Bus Forum member in Edmond, a suburb north of OKC. Then on out along route 66 across the high plains, the Texas panhandle and into New Mexico. Then I"ll veer north once I get west of Santa Rosa through Santa Fe and up, up into southern Colorado to Pagosa Springs to spend a week visiting Family. Then I will head west 60 miles to visit another Bus Forum friend in Durango, Colorado. After that stop it's on to four corners, Monument Valley and the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Then dip south to Flagstaff/Williams Arizona then west along route 66 to Kingman. Then up through Arizona to Las Vegas for a few days with family there. Then back south through Nevada to Route 66 and on into California and the end of route 66 at the Santa Monica pier, and then a few miles south for a couple of weeks with family there on the coast.
I have not planned a return route yet, I will deal with that issue after I reach the blue Pacific.
I will post pictures on my Instagram account. If you are along my westward route and would not mind a visit and a bus parked on your property overnight send a PM and we will exchange contact information to schedule a time to meet.
Regards...

I'm stoked for you Jeff! I'll be watching to see when you arrive in Pagosa so I can get ready for your arrival here in Durango. My driveway is flat and you are more then welcome to camp there for as many nights as you'd like. Weekends are best for me and if you can make that happen maybe we could go camping in the La Plata Mountains, weather permitting.
Best of luck to you out there and safe travels!

Oh man! So happy for you, what a trip!
I essentially did this route after graduating college, and hope to again some day.

What a great trip. You gotta see the Pacific North West (Bus Mecca)Right? PM sent. If time permits. I would bus over to BC one of the most beautiful places on earth and contact Bus Daddy. Then head down to Seattle and check out Notchboy/Bleyseng/Stuart and the gang. Head down to Portland, one of the greatest towns. Then over to the coast for an amazing coastal trip down to SoCal. Then loop it back your original route. Weather would be ideal then. What ever you end up doing its going to be awesome. _________________ Keep on Busin'

I'm excited for you, Jeff! I know you're a card-carrying member of the "actually drives his bus club," so this trip should be no sweat for you!
I'm North of San Diego, and though I don't have camping space, I can recommend some great places for boondocking, surfing, beer drinking, or oil-changing.
Have a great trip sir!

Hey Jeff, if you need a driveway to camp in, you're welcome in Tulsa, OK on the return trip. Feel free to PM me if your OKC hook up isn't available and you need a place to crash. Enjoy dude, and congratulations. _________________ -Tony

I'm in Pagosa right now. We are about to head up the mountain to the Four Corners Folk Festival, my wife is vending her jewelry. I'm gonna set the bus and her vending tent up then head back to Durango in my truck, I have to work tomorrow, and back on Friday night.
I don't use the Instagram. _________________ __________

That's cool about the Instagram, I just won't be posting pictures here, or writing about my trip on the forum.
I can drive over to Durango on Sunday morning if you will be in town. I am staying with my parents in Pagosa Lakes.
I hope to be heading on to points west early next week.

I would take the trip to the pier just to meet and chat with you. Perhaps a little VW GTG when you arrive? _________________ 1969 Transporter
