. I have a 74 bettle on a 70 chassis. With a 1600 motor and everything says empi on it. I havent even begun to read up and understand the motors and aftermarket components yet. I will in time.
Question on fenders. Original owner tried to weld bumper opening closed on them with disasterous results. I'm not worried about keeping it matching to year specs. I am going to chop it up, lower it, bag it. I like the look of older fenders and lights and dbl stacked bumper and since I am buying all new parts.
Will older fenders and bumpers fit the body of the 74? Before I order and have to return them. Fabricating holes etc is no problem, just worried about body shape fitting. |

VW did us all a favor and built the VW with as little change as possible - making all manner of swapping easy. You can change to the early fenders but you won't be able to bolt up old style bumpers without changing the mounting brackets - or making your own. The fenders won't match perfectly - for that I think you need to graft in the early style apron - front and back IIRC. Someone might know more about this - and it wouldn't surprise me! CRS and all! I've done my share of swapping parts but that was 30-40 years ago.
Note that Supers are different enough on the front that none of the front fenders are interchangeable with a standard. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

How old are ya looking to go with the fenders? 68 and up should bolt on using the same bumper brackets and 68 up bumpers but any older will require changing the bumper mounts and cutting the bumper bracket holes in the apron. That is unless you change the apron and hood to match. As far as fender bolt location goes, I think you should be fine there although I've never tried to do it myself. Either way it can be done if that's the direction you wanna go. |
