Right.... I thought he was asking for reviews/opinions on a specific aftermarket product not general OE taillight questions... |

They are not interchangeable. They are two different sizes, and are wired differently.
Is there a particular type you are looking for? Or for a particular year? |

well im looking into whether I can put on the "electric" 2/3 type on my standard rear light bodies as my old original hella lens have not got the tell tale cracks all over the top & the "electric" type will match up with my front indicators pretty well (see pics)
So, in theory I want to remove the 2 screws - ditch the hellas & simply screw on a pair of electric lens to my retained/original rear lamp body ..........but can I ?
I ask as 1 seller says yes & 1 says no ??????????????
apologies if not being clear initially
my original current rear lamp
indicator

The "electric tail lights" in question and referenced ARE aftermarket..
They replaced snowflakes.. for better rear vision.. BEFORE 1962.
Buy them.. Im sure they can be made to work.. by altering your housing a little.... if not.. sell them and make some money.. ..
See if the one selling that claims they fit.. offers money back if they don't.,.
Report and post pictures your findings..
Ya only live once...

From the "other" threads I have read.... yes..
and
To add a safety factor to semaphore cars..
Plus...
I think Italy and Australia were the most common countries to find these in as "some" countries required a separate and or amber turn signal..
Hence a dual bulb tail light.....
VW later followed the better idea and began using something similar.
(You seem to have the Italian front turn side window covers as well.. ???)
I can not find the topics... but thats what I remember..
Here is one with dead links....But there are more.. somewhere..
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=581677
The Aftermarket "electric tail lights" were offered BEFORE VW started using the similar larger tail lights found on most 62 -67.
I think Mera and Perohaus were the suppliers of these electric tail items we are referring
I cant take credit for any pictures.. and any information I have passed along.. it may or may not be 100% accurate..
In all honesty.. I snagged most of the pictures from the classified to archive for TheSamba.. as currently a NOS set is the classified.
I hate for good information to be lost... or worse.. lost because of improper and dead photo links..

BIG thanks for all that info, I can see why the confusion arises as the electric lights do look very like the post / pre tomb stone type of rear lamp
as my initial ad read my car is 65, could they have also made these electric style for the later cars like mine too? I say this as some of the pics with electric lens on bodies don't look like the snowflake type as aren't these more a rounded profile as they meet the lens ? hard to tell with pics maybe
love to see a pic of rear lamps discussed side by side
the indicators are indeed Italian spec I like them as they give me more "Blink" from my 6 volts |

The "electric tail lights" and their housings are nearly the same size as the common 62-67 VW tail lamps.
They are much larger than the "snowflakes".
Clearly you can tell wiih this picture.

I'd be most interested to see the non-electric tail lights? gas operated? |
They are a step above.. acetylene carbide lights...
I was wondering when someone was going to think and post the same thing I have been..
Some sort of ad gimmick.. .. I guess..
Not the name I would have chosen..

More info found for the 50/50 style..
For Australia and Italy.
" the rear lenses being of a design used only in Australia and Italy. "

I have 50'50s on my bug.. they are smaller than the later lights but bigger than snowflakes. So the lenses themselves aren't interchangeable - you need different housing/bases and I had to get custom rubber seals made for them as well. _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

Some little additional information on the 50/50 lights
In Italy in 1958 a new law was introduced for road traffic: the orange light was mandatory (in the back).
So VW produced, for Italy, these lights from 1958 until July 1961.
I don't know the history of Australian law.
Greetings from Italy
Ciao!!!
