I thought this was covered before, but "search" did not find it for me, so here goes.

Anyone know what the various white stamped markings on our fan shrouds mean?

I've seen two types. The first is an off-kilter, "I.O." stamp. Any idea what it means?

The other varies but includes an M-code, sometimes signifying low compression or other engine variations, including these:

Comment from post: "The 'S723' marking on my belt shroud is what I believe to be the special model designation for these cars."

We have the M-code listings here:

...but not the meaning of all markings, including the "I.O." marking (which is probably a German abbreviation, making it even harder to find out).

Anyone got the Rosetta Stone to translate? Or a link where we already discussed this?

I seem to recall reading two different things about the I.O. One is that it's an inspection mark representing the German phrase "In Ordnung" meaning "in order", "okay", etc.

The other thing I think was from Tram who said that VW workers joked that it stood for the mysterious "Inspektor Otto" who gave his seal of approval to parts. Check with him to be sure.

I wish someone repro'd those timing stickers. Ours didn't survive the last rebuild.

Correct. Implies that the entire engine ran on the factory test stand after assembly and has been approved for installation on the production line.

Dang, I guess I got that one years ago, probably from West Coast Metric. I see some repros for sale but they call out 7.5 degrees, not 0.
