The rear shock towers are taller on later pans so you would not be able to bold on shocks on the rear without cutting the body. It might be possible to modify the towers or make adaptors to mount the short split shocks though. |
What year did the shock towers change?
Thanks

Only if Bill A. sold it around 1970. Would love to sort out some history on this...it was sent new to Gramling Volkswagen in Karlsruhe Germany on March 19 1952. The guy I bought it from (not Bill A.) in the summer of 2015 purchased it in Old Saybrook Connecticut sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. This is going by the previous owner's memory, as any paperwork was long gone. The owner's name from Old Sayboook is forgotten/ unknown, so history is missing from 1952 until around 1970. |

Progress.. can-openered the tunnel, cut off the various swiss cheese metal, sent it to the blaster, new gerson pans, restored cable tubes, new fuel pipe, new Gerson pans, hand fabbed correct frame head side plates, welding, welding, and more welding, epoxy primer in and out..we're on the way now!

One is black/white pasha, One is cork pinstripes, both are manuals.
Not really hijacking, but probably enough water cooled porsche pics in the split forum for now. |

334191 is on the road for the first time since the early 1970s. The recently received birth certificate indicates a matching number engine (sitting in the corner of my shop) and that the car built on March 12 1952 and arrived at Gramling VW in Karlsruhe Germany on March 19.
I used all of the basically untouched chassis components for the chassis rebuild (brakes, beam, kamax hardware, etc) then used a tunnel case trans with 1966 H0 stock bus motor and some vintage mags for fun. Not rodded, cut, or slammed, it remains substantially stock. Pardon the use of the free set of 60s running boards i got from a friend.
While this execution may not be to everyone's taste, everything I worked on was toward a proper restoration. Im going to enjoy it like this for a while, but may restore the "top half" some day.
So still looking for correct headlights and rear bumper, originals only please and a little crusty is a plus.
I really appreciate and learn a lot from this community, and especially the guys who create long detailed build threads on here...sorry I just don't have the time for that myself. Special thanks to a few members who's knowledge and/or products helped me a lot:
Virtanen and Gerson: without them this project would have been impossible!
Splitjunkie, zarworks (john) vintage fiberglass, Kaefer Nostalgie, splitparts unlimited, hazetguy56, plus a lot more. I especially thank the old guy I bought it from and his generosity for letting me climb through his barns full of vintage VW stuff to help me get this thing together (No Im not mentioning his name or where he is)
Finally thanks to Everett..think of where we'd be without his vision.
I plan to bring it to a few events in the coming weeks:
VW show at the elks lodge in westbrook CT on sept 25
Larz Anderson VW day in Brookline MA on October 19,
MAYBE the air cooled gathering in Flanders NJ on sept 17.

Well done. Car looks great! What a Really really fantastic look and patina this car has. I'm really happy to see the car hasn't been repainted yet, I Hope it will stay that way.
Hopefully you'll be able to post lots more updates. _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

x3; Nice to see your photos, goals and stock-worthy eventual direction on such an original well-patinated beetle.
Enjoy and continue sourcing those evasive last items meanwhile.
BTW, my car was built two days later (March 14, 1952); also has matching numbers, its OG engine...and was originally black too; ...

Nice to stumble upon something local that I haven't seen before! Also gives me a kick in the pants to get moving on my '50 Standard which has been waiting patiently for some love... |

That's awesome, and I applaud you for keeping the body as-is. Patina tells a story - and man, if this thing could talk! |

I was fortunate to see this barn find in late summer '15 and was just blown away by it!
It was instant desire, with dreams to park it front & center in my shop to view as an objet d'art, as-is (as was).
The work that's been done to it since was really well thought out, and I'm totally impressed with his vision of preservation for the old girl. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of these early ones!
