PostPosted: Fri Aug 28, 2015 10:38 pm    Post subject: Need Engine Wiring Help Please Reply with quote

It was 3 years ago I took the engine out to restore the car and I have forgotten where the wires go??
I can only find one thicker red wire to the starter motor and I think the red one I fitted to a regulator? on the fan shroud might need to go to the starter
Any help appreciated

There should be a bundle of wires coming near the firewall, drivers side, high up. That should have one for the coil, one for the oil pressure, one for the generator light and a handful for the turn signals.

I see them in your picture.

There are great wiring diagrams here in the technical section.

If you told us what year you are working on we could direct you to the correct year wiring diagram in the tech section.......

Then you could drop it onto a flash drive and take it to the office store and have it enlarged and laminated .

Then next time you had a wiring question you would have the answer right there in your hands .

Well, it's good that you are not yet able to start this engine. I'm assuming that you do have the remainder of the tins, to be fitted later. And same for the fan shroud hoses.

What also concerns me is that your 12 volt generator is installed incorrectly, needs to be rotated so the cooling slots and the terminals will be in the correct position. I could tell because your wiring terminals are in the wrong orientation, should look like this:

Hi. This looks to be an early swing axle car converted to 12v? As previously stated the generator is incorrectly installed. Just spinning the gen clockwise to have the wire terminals in the correct position may not be correct. The black sheetmetal that supports the gen and attaches to the shroud needs to have the cooling exit slot facing downward.
You have incorrectly installed the wires from the gen to the volt regulator. On the right side of the reg the large push-on will go to the large starter post. The smaller push-on connector should be a small blue wire which comes in from the left and is your gen warning lite wire.
The harness from the left will contain a large red wire that goes to the regulator large push-on. A black wire that goes to the coil positive. A poss green or bluish wire will go to the oil pressure switch.
This will be the basics.
Please consider, depending on your experience, removing the volt reg from the fan shroud. I have seen vibration loosen them up and potentially cause an electrical fire, or at a minimum a intense short to ground.
Hope this helps, Bill.

Thanks
The engine was originally out of the car and I am having another built for it
Thats why its not clean, its just being refitted so I can move it.
What you see is how it was purchased I have not moved or fitted anything.
I can only see one large red wire I presume goes to the starter
A very short black wire that wont reach anything
A bluey green I presume is the oil pressure wire a red you can see going to the reg
I will be fitting all the other bits but I would like to start it first thanks.

Its an Australian 67, these were all originally 6 volt but this was converted to 12

I managed to get some time to work on my car again
Still stumped on the wiring
Does this look right and does the one I am pointing to in the second pic go to the red wire from the generator? Its a red wired from the main loom.

Laughing Obviously not too good..This ones going up in smoke soon...

Stop.... Speak to the hand
Its attached all wrong.. and its still missing circuits (wires)

Take note... even if you have to draw it out...

Most if not ALL of the parts on your car have terminal numbers molded or stamped into them.. and those MATCH the diagram..

LOOK ON THE REGULATOR FOR THE TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS>>

Yes.. you may have to remove it to see them... but if you follow the basic diagram.. a picture is worth all these next words...

Connect Gen to Regulator.. ID numbers to numbers.. DF to DF.. D+ to D+
D= Dynamo by the way.
F = Field
+ = Positive.. obviously

The BIG BLUE wire looks like its attached to a Generator terminal.. and the reg base... Not good.. Spooooof...

Most likely the short ground was to the BASE mount of the regulator as thats common practice when relocating the regulator. (ground from reg to gen case or engine case)

The medium size red wire on the (right small) spade (looks like) the starter signal circuit from the ign switch (Circuit 50).. The Gen light circuit (blue) (61) should be connected there.. again look for numbers..

The 2 LARGE B + circuits.. one would come from the starter MAIN battery lug and the other is routed along with the dash and turn circuits.. They MEET at the B+ terminal on the regulator large 2 spades.. one connected to each B+ spade..
The B+ wires are noticeable larger than any others.. Most likely the eye terminal on the big red wire WAS a large spade terminal.. Lots of times.. a repair like that is made.. the hole in the B+ regulator spade is made larger and its attached with a screw...
Either attach with a screw or replace with the proper large female spade..

whew... all a that.. thats seen in the knuckle dragging man diagram.. Laughing

Here is a 67 Euro diagram.. whats IMPORTANT .. LOOK at the regulator connections numbers.. you want to mimic and match these..
Note.. plus add the ground from the regulator base to the gen case..or engine case.. its not in the diagram.. because.. if the regulator were in a original location.. it wouldn't be needed.

Its that simple...like connecting the dots..

Look.. pictures... (arrrggh arrrggh arrrgh) Laughing

COME ON PEOPLE !!!

Who else doesn't know that the wiring diagrams are here on SAMBA .

Go to the technical section (click on " TECHNICAL / wiring "l on the dark blue line at the top of THIS PAGE ).
THEN click on TYPE 1
then scroll down to your year
then drop to a flash drive
then go to office store and have it printed and enlarged in color
then have it laminated

NOW you can follow circuts with a dry erase marker
when you have fixed your problem wipe clean for the next challenge

I HAVE TWO ! one at home and a second that stays in the car

"COME ON PEOPLE !!! "

Wiring is, for many people, very intimidating. Especially if wiring colors are jacked up on there car vs an unmolested car. Then there's that regulator position which is an "insurance claim in the making"!
Bill.
