I've got my filler neck out, put the elbow back on at the correct angle. Now I'm trying my best to get the damn mercedes rubber hose on the tank side, there's no way, my engine is in. What can i put on it to help it along...spit? Very awkward angle. What did others do?

Yeah that isn't doing it... I can see why every picture I see of this being done the engine has been removed.

I've done it with motor in and with motor out. It might help if you drop the motor down (take top trans bolts out, take moustache bar bolts out, lower it with floor jack slowly).

If you got the firewall out, you should be in the clear.

Lots of cussing, red spots on wrists, and medical marijuana may be required.

Like I always say, it might suck, but it's gunna get done!

One of the most useful tools in my arsenal is a Snap On radiator hose pick that has been shortened and rounded a bit. If I could only carry a dozen tools with me, the radiator pick might well be one of the tools I would choose to take.

I wonder if you took the hose down to a muffler shop if they could expand it a tiny bit for you without harming the hose? Would make life easier if they could.

Silicone spray lube may help,I'v used it often while working on trucks.
It's also good for refreshing door seals, and window tracks.

Little bit of soap and I got really pissed off and raged out. I had the metal filler neck out and I repeatedly put the rubber hose on/off to stretch it a bit. That may have helped.

I agree with Gary- Hot water and an old baseball with the cover off helped expand my buddy's hose enough to put it on easily. Also agree with Wildthings, that radiator hose pick is the nazz- end up using it for all kinds of shit.

Removing a hose.
Note how the hose tool does not come to a sharp point. It is more of a blunt point.
Work the point of the tool just under the edge of the hose and spray wd-40 in the gap. Then continue working the tool around the circumference of the fitting spraying as you go until the hose breaks free.
Installing a hose.
Spray the inner diameter of the hose with wd-40. Start the edge of the hose over the fitting by hand. With the tool pull the rest of the lip over the fitting. Spray fitting and with a slight twisting motion install hose.

WD‑40
It is safe to use on metal, rubber, wood and plastic. It can also be applied to painted metal surfaces without harming the paint. Polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic are among the few surfaces on which to avoid using a petroleum-based product like WD-40® Multi-Use Product.
