I see that Flat4 offers a Wolfsburg horn button. Is that a historically correct option for an original Empi wheel? The reason that I ask------my '61 Ghia has an original Empi wheel that was installed in the mid-late 60s and it has the Wolfsburg button. Up until now, I have been told that it was a homemade alteration, but now I am not so sure. Confused

Have you asked in the Accessory Forum...a lot of them are excessively picky about getting things right to the nth degree. Wink

Yup-----I asked over there years ago. That's where I was informed that Empi never made such a thing even though the wheel itself is clearly marked "Empi". I bought the car in the late 90's from a local estate and it had been tucked away in a shed for 30 years before that. Other period accessories include Talbot/Berlin mirrors, Porsche356 shifter, and an Empi camber compensator.

I saw the identical item in at VintageVeeDub in Sydney, Australia, and it was not EMPI. The Cip1 model is different - I bought one and still have to install it.

Contact Boris Orazem at [email protected] - the price with the fittings included was about US 300, if I recall correctly, and the quality was impressive.

The initial pic looks like a repop Flat4 wheel. The "new" ones are made by flat4 and are all repops @ around $260 or so.
The real EMPI ones are going to be closer to $1000. There are many different repop horn buttons, check classifieds. Iowiegn, I think yours may be an older repop button. ISP made some nice buttons that read EMPI GT, very close to the real ones, I think they got in trouble Laughing

This is a real Empi next to a ISP repop. Repop on right.

But-------mine is a genuine Empi wheel with a Wolfsburg Crest button.
I know it has been in the car for over 45 years. So, the puzzle continues.

There are a lot of repop buttons. Some fit VW wheels, some fit Flat4 wheels and some fit OG EMPI GTV wheels.

I've never seen a Wolfsberg crest on a EMPI GTV wheel. Post up a pic, and one of the back of the button. Here is exploded view of A real EMPI and one of ISP's early repops.

Don't hold your breath, Darrel - Chuck's VCR clock has been blinking 12:00 since he bought it back in 1992, so the chances of him figuring out how to post a picture here are next to nill unless either the instructions for posting a picture referenced here include a note on how to digitize the image taken with an old Brownie box camera, or one of his grandchildren happens to comes over with their iPhone.

Look at all the trouble you're causing you old fart Wink

I even took a run through of the old EMPI catalogs I have on file last night and I did find a couple of pictures of the EMPI deep dish wheel with a Wolfsburg Crest...in the '66 and '67 catalog IIRC...anyone got a link on how to post pictures in this place? Laughing

The '70 catalog shows your wheel with a EMPI GT horn button also available a padded EMPI.

You are right--------but the knowledgeable Grandkids are in California and here I sit in Iowa, so that doesn't help. Crying or Very sad
In any event, after looking again at the photos of c21darrel's original button (and having a pleasant 'phone conversation with him), there is no doubt in my mind that my Wolfsburg button is genuine and not home-made or a reproduction.
I guess it's time for me to buy a modern camera and prove this. Embarassed

When I was looking through the EMPI catalogs at the pictures of their Steering Wheels I didn't find any separate listings for the Horn Buttons although they were listed as part of the Steering Wheel kit.

Yes, On our call, he admitted the high level of his computer literacy. Wink
But he said the blinking clock is mechanical and on a Betamax machine....
So it seems he has an authentic steering wheel and horn button based on verbal evidenceVery Happy One nice piece of evidence is the centering tit on his button.
Mr. Iowegian, is going to try to get us some pics. I promised to upload some pics of the backside of my button.

The ring has the same machining or casting marks on the back.
