class 11 help?

does anyone where i can get info on class 11 baja's?..mainly the suspension..if any different from stock.

Im building a Class 11 style car also. You can get rule book from SCORE for the "real" Class 11 race car. I am building a 66 body on a late IRS 68 pan ( Yeah 68 IRS..think autostick!!! ) with a 3 inch body lift and with 3 inch front lifted spindles. I cant decide on tire size/type and which method to use on lifting the rear end. The car is straight and clean with a factory metal sunroof and the pan I restored the pan about 2 years ago to duplicate a friends killer all original 66 Beetle. Its like new with all new parts, pans, paint etc. I bought the friends 66 and had all of this "left over". The motor put aside for it is a late Dual Port 1600 with a Engle 100 cam, Compufire DIS IX and a stock tricked out 34 carb.
Finding info on these cars is tough. There is a killer pic of a Class 11 style "comanduer" car in the forum today. I had a Class 11 a few years ago and had a blast driving it and it drew all kinds of attention!!! This one will be Bigger and better than the last one. I would think these cars would be more popular!!

I had a 70 and a 64 "baja" several years ago.No fiberglass kit,just cut the fenders and add bigger tires.I have always liked the way class 11 vw's looked and didn't know how to get the bigger tires under them.I have a 69 I want to "raise" a bit.Thanks for the feedback on the subject!

The suspension is stock per the rule book,but if your not going to race build it the way you want. www.score-international.com has the rule books for sale for like $15 if you still want one. Also www.chenowth.com sells a Class11 roll cage that would be a good start, it has to be welded in though. Good luck.

speaking of class11, who has used the chenowth or similar rollcage?does it actually support you in a rollover or is it just for show? i know the cage surrounds the driver, does it go back into the rear seat area?

the chenowth kit is the real deal, and yes it will help in event of a rollover. you can forget the rear seat, because several tube brace the rear torsion tube and frame horn,etc. my rollcage is a different design but the rearseat is still eliminated. there is a couple of photos of my ride in the readers rides section

Just wondering if there is a particular year bug better suited to Class 11 racing or are they all pretty much equal? Does anyone know if type 2 transaxles are ok in class 11 (just ordered the Score rule book). Thanks-

'69 and later are better as you are limited on suspension, so the balljoint front end will last ok. Be sides they are cheaper than the eariler ones. Only type one parts are allowed, no bus boxes.

if type 1 suspensions are used, are they still stock or are they modified for strength?

how do you lift the suspension? is a class 11 essentially a stock beetle?

also, any good website with lotsa class 11 pics?

class11s are cool IMO, way cooler than bajas... Very Happy

are those rear suspension all stock? won't the cv's break down in that angle?

how did you raise the front suspension?

Well in the rear I am using thing flanges,bus cvs, bug axles, stock trailing arms, and modified type 1 stub axles. Pretty much stock vw. In the front I cut and turned the front end, I have 3 inch raised spindles with disc brakes from SoCal Imports. You should check the thread "Lifts and CVs". Anyways hope this helps. I also posted pictures of the rear suspension in the off-road gallery.

are the spring plates as far as they can go or did you leave some space for them to travel? ...... are they touching the stops?

No, the spring plates are not touching the stops. There is probably 2 inches from the spring plate to the stop. One added benefit is that I did not have to fight the spring plates to get them back on, also makes for a smoother ride since the torsion bars are not preloaded that much. Pretty much rides like a stock bug.
