Can anyone tell me what's going on with reverse? Start the car, shift into reverse, and after the vehicle begins rolling, push in the clutch with shifter still in reverse---car comes to an abrupt STOP. Does it every time. |

I'm just trying to figure out how you can have the transmission in reverse with the motor running and roll the car all while the clutch is engaged. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

Sorry, probably did not clearly describe the problem. While backing up under power every time I push the clutch in the car comes to an abrupt stop. |

The only thing I can think of is that the clutch pedal is somehow binding up on the brake pedal - but that would happen in any gear and not just reverse. You've got a problem I've never heard of. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

The owner of the shop that rebuilt the trans scratched his head and had a one-word comment "Bizarre". Can't wait to see what he finds when he cracks the trans open. |

Release your hand brake.
Adjust your brakes so they aren't dragging when your foot is off the pedal. _________________

Did both. Bear in mind it only does this when the trans is in reverse. Rolls back with no problem at all in nuetral. If it was the brake it would stop suddenly in neutral as well as in reverse. ??? |

Common problem when there is extreme slop in the pinion bearings. Once you let off on the gas in reverse the pinion gets sucked into the ring gear and binds up. If you have put many miles on the box with it this way the ring and point are probably toast. |

Never found out the source of the problem, but the shop that put in the rebuilt made good on it and I have another trans in and it feels perfect. Hats off to Always VW in Portland! |
