Okay, so how is the heat supposed to be on a 1990 Cabriolet? Mine is pretty wimpy, keeping somwhat warm now but in the winter time it won't be much heat at all. I also has smell of old radiator fluid. My dip stick is still quite clean, due for an oil change in 2 weeks as well as the radiator fluid which i had thermostat, radiator and engine flush done 3 weeks ago. the only type of leak i have is from the power steering pump. I hope no blown head gasket. Thanks for your suggestions. Also, could the heater core be clogged? and anytime of solution to clean it out. I have been doing some reading online and found a couple of people stating same thing as me.
Also, looking to change out the vaccum hoses. These hoses just hoses from autopart store?

Sounds like a leaky heater core. Not very hard to change on a those. It wasn't a cabby, but my mkI Rabbit had very good heat. Only had to do the heater core once in the 20+yrs I drove it.

Not on a mkI body, might be different if it has AC(I've never dealt with AC on a mkI). The heater box on a mkI will come out from under the dash after you pull the fan out from the plenum from outside with 4 screws and a couple of cable connections. Then it's just 2 hoses and out. You may need to remove shifter console and some other minor stuff, but the mkI's didn't have much in the way. Could be another story if there is AC stuff in the mix.
