had a shift rod coupler come loose last night and the car jumped out of 4th gear a couple times. Does two or three times popping out damge the slider or gear teeth? I got in to late last night to tighten it and run around the block and I had to leave town early this morning for 5 days. hoping to tighten it up and be back on the road......Steve |

The coupler will not hold it in gear, the slider is already worn _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

I'm kinda thinking that the coupler wasn't pulling it all the way in gear. It was very loose. I'm hoping that is it...Steve |

Normally when a car jumps out of 4th, there are multiple problems. We just did a bus that needed internal transmission work, a rebuilt shifter, had a bent shift rod, and had a blown up coupler. Once all of that was fixed, it worked perfect. _________________ Please "LIKE" us on facebook to see what we are working on.

Yeah, I just put a new (used) slider and gear in it. It was working great til the coupler came loose. I guess I have 2 posible outcomes. Tighten the coupler and all is good or tighten the coupler and it still jumps out of gear.....lol.just really don't want to go back into it..steve |

I may end up going that way if it still jumps out. Sux to have a problem like that as your heading out the door for 4 days. I guess I'm just hoping that if the loose coupling was the reason (not getting it all the way in gear) it happened that it didn't damage the gear or slider....Steve |

Did you put the new / used slider & gear in,,, cause of this problem??? previously jumping out of gear??? (and the problem is still not fixed???) Short throw shifter & no traction bar??? "pulling itself out of gear"???? (used mounts???) something must be pulling on it for the coupler to come loose!!! Doug... |

Couple Q's come to mind....
Did you check the 'dog' teeth on the gear before installing it?
Did you install the new or used 3-4 slider facing the correct way?
Did someone fix Doug's key board so the CAPS LOCK wasn't stuck on? |

As much as I hate to admit it, my buddy that was helping me tightened it finger tight and forgot about it. This is why I generally work alone. Yeah it was popping out before. Groove on slider is facing 4th. I'll tighten up the coupler Saturday and post what happens |

Exessive movement in the mainshaft will also cause it to jump out of fourth gear also _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

It was a good tight trans except for fourth. I don't know the history of the gearbox or why it originally jumped out gear. I didn't find anything suspect inside, but Ive only done maybe a half dozen trannys. Will post results saturday....Steve |

I guess im going to pull the trans next week and rerepair 4th gear. It actually stays in 4th fine just cruising down the road. Not until you start to put a load on it does it pop out. You can actually put your finger on the shift lever and it stays in even under load. Gotta be something very minor. IM definitely going to make sure the shaft isn't moving in the case. Anybody got any idea on what to pay particular attention to? ......Steve |

Due to the angle of the helix cut gears, the main shaft is pulled forward when you apply power. This moves everything on the main shaft. The fork is not attached to the main shaft, so effectively, the fork pulls it out of gear when the shaft moves forward.
Look to see if the main shaft ball bearing has pounded into the nose cone. Every 73 and later gearbox I open up has some degree of pounding. I've measured the movement to be over 1mm. _________________

What do the teeth look like on fourth gear? Can you cut the fat teeth off the synchro cone? |

I think my best option is a new synchro hub and slider |
