Hi all..i wonder if anyone can help me....i know this is a long shot but i have just purchased this 56 and am trying to locate the person who originally built the car and wondered if anyone here might recognize it. As far as i know from the person i bought it from, the guy built it around 15 years ago - it has a grafted ragtop and was obviously being built as a classic cal-looker bu the project stalled and he sold it to the people i bought it from. I would like to find out what the original colour was and some more history about it etc. As far as i know it has always been a California car. Thanks in advance.

If you can wait, perhaps order the birth certificate for it? Pretty sure the colour is listed on that, also where/when it was made etc _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

I've always found that a lot of resprays in a different color aren't always taken completely apart and every square inch painted in the new color. You might be able to find some of the original color hiding somewhere or under something too. _________________ -Greg |

Yeah, unless the car was dipped you should be able to find some original paint on it somewhere. Check under the back seat, heater Chanel under the carpet, behind the rear door panels or even behind the tar board I the engine compartment. Once you have an idea if it was silver, green, black or whatever you can just go to the color chart on here and figure out exactly what shade it was and the name or paint code for it. I've been hearing that the birth certificates are taking like 7-8 months to arrive so I'd be going crazy waiting for it. Good luck with it. |

That car will never be original again, and has the wrong top grafted in. I would enjoy it as a cal look beetle and have some fun with it |

Because that top has four round corners. A correct 56 top has square corner's in the rear and round corner's up front. |

Change the piece in the rear, or turn it around. Square again. The piece in rear comes off and can be changed. Sometimes they were grinded down to fit the top that was available, heard of this in the 90's. |

In May of 56 VW started using four round corners on rag tops.
56 started with 4 square corners then went to two back square then four round corners. _________________ F#CK CANCER

Most 56 ragtops would have square rear corners and round front corners as was stated earlier, just the rear tacking strip is different than the typical 2-fold style |

Besides the tack strip, 1956-only roof skins have the captive nuts attached directly to the underside of the roof, much like 1950-55 cars.
1957-63 used a tack strip with threaded studs attached-

Just because current dkp cars have trim doesn't mean it's true cal look. Notice how dkp website took the 1/4mi time off the rules list... because they can't keep up anymore. _________________ Gotta give my props to:

This is what thesamba is all about!! Kielbasa - it has what I consider to be the most important aspects of Cal-look - big carbed motor and a nose down stance!!
The info about the rag top is very interesting..i would hope at least that it is an original section and not an aftermarket top..I am going to leave the car and enjoy as is but I would have liked to know the original color etc as I like to know stuff like that. _________________ Blah..... |

It's a good looking car.. well if you finish adding the trim and color match the door. Just not very cal looky. As for rag top, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's a graft, you can't go back from that. Just be glad it's not a 55 with a 2 fold. If the job was done right just enjoy it. _________________ Gotta give my props to:
