Hi new guy here!
I'm trying to choose some colors for my 70 ghia. The current color is not a Karmann Ghia stock color. I would like to show the car and am looking for something (naturally) that attracts positive attention.
I would love some feedback from the experts! (My interior is black).
Color contenders:
(Ghia stock colors)
Castilian Yellow
Dolphin Blue
Graphite Silver
Savannah Beige
Anthracite
Silver Metallic
Any thoughts??

My favorite Ghia color is Bernina Blue but it was not avail on a coupe my year so I went with the Dolphin. Strato is another beautiful color.

Anthracite to my eyes is very dull. Either of the silvers will look good. Mango from the early cars is a very cool color too.

Quot homines tot sententiae (Cicero). As many opinions as men.

But Cicero said nothing about compromising by having a two-tone Ghia. So many choices:

White, black roof
Red, black roof
Silver (metallic), black roof
Light blue, navy blue roof
All these go with the black interior. IMHO

But a good starting position would be the car's original colour.

I would select a colour from the official VW colour palette for the year of you Ghia. You'll find a list here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/paintcodesghia.php

If there's a "camera" icon next to the listed colour it will show you what it looks like on a Ghia. Choose a stock colour and you'll add value to your restoration and it will reflect the mood of the age...we're not here to build modern looking cars.

Also look at the Ghias in this topic, click on the "Bookmark" link at the bottom of the page so you can go back and forth and browse the hundreds of Ghias: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435019

People will suggest anything and everything so you have to remember it's not an exercise to gauge popularity, it's to make YOUR choice.

BTW listen to nobody here...but me. Wink

Black.

Yep, black is good for the chassis.

And for when it was your car's original colour. Like John's.

Wow, thanks everyone!
I've been browsing through the vw karmann ghia color swatches found on this site.
I'll try to keep it around the make of the year of my car.
I look forward to communicating with you on other ghia topics in the future.
Regards,
Eric

Not to disagree with others on this page because everyone has their opinion. I agree with John on using a stock color for only two reasons.

1) you are doing a complete original restoration
2) you truly love the color.

Otherwise what I recommend is looking at all older vintage cars from the 60's and 70's. Find something with a curvy body.

Just painted my 70 Ghia!
Since I'm doing a resto mod I went with a new VW/Audi color..
Daytona dark grey metallic Matte w/pearl effect.
Spent 2 weekends wet sanding the clear coat. 800 to remove orange peel, then 1500, then 2000. Used Meguiar's compound to buff, results weren't the best..
Changed to Turtle Wax compound...incredible results!

Your car looks like it is in excellent shape. The color does not look like the original Pampas Yellow but it is period correct. Do you have remnants of the original color in the engine bay, trunk, behind carpets, etc.? If so what was it? I would say keep the paint thats on it and work on other things for now, like the nose vents, mirrors, etc. To do a color change correctly is a body off restoration, which I've never done but I know is much work and much money, and it doesn't seem worth it when it looks like you have such a nice car already. If you have remnants of the original color, you might think later about a respray to bring the outside back to original.

My favorite color on Ghias is signal orange--have had 2 of them. The last one I bought new in 74 and still drive regularly. Second favorite color is yellow. Both colors offer the increase benefit of highly visible colors which is a safety feature not to be overlooked--especially in these days of huge SUVs that probably are driven by texting females.

Akear, the original color is Lemon yellow. Still present under the hood ,trunk, and interior.
Thanks for the compliments.
The Ghia lived in San Francisco until 2004. So it's solid.
I have original style side view mirrors, antenna, and air vents just waiting to be installed.
