If you like to original color that would be the best choice. After that a color that was available for your year car.
My '71 was originally yellow. I don't think that color works well on these cars. Silver is nice but with a red interior, not black. I ended up with red from the '71 color palette because the car was going to be driven primarily by my wife and she had a red Ghia many years ago. Also I completely redid the interior to tan which looks good with the red.
Adriatic blue that year was nice. I had a 70 Ghia in that color with black interior as shown here:

Hi new guy here!
I'm trying to choose some colors for my 70 ghia. The current color is not a Karmann Ghia stock color. I would like to show the car and am looking for something (naturally) that attracts positive attention.
I would love some feedback from the experts! (My interior is black).
Color contenders:
(Ghia stock colors)
Castilian Yellow
Dolphin Blue
Graphite Silver
Savannah Beige
Anthracite
Silver Metallic
Any thoughts?? |
OK - I've managed to stay quiet on this topic so far because I feel that whatever color (or even colour) you decide to paint your Ghia should be a very personal choice ... as long as you don't paint it black.
... but I am only human, and can only restrain myself for just so long.
The only comment that I will make is this - if you are seriously considering Castilian Yellow as a possible color, then you should make a point of seeing a Castilian Yellow Volkswagen in person first before you fully commit.
I'm not saying that it is a bad color choice - my 1967 Ghia is Castilian Yellow, and is the one in the picture that you will see if you click on that color in the above referenced Karmann Ghia color chart in the Technical section here on The Samba.
I'm just here to tell you that the color has a certain component to it that just doesn't show up in pictures the same that it does in person.
It's not just a simple plain light yellow like the earlier Manila Yellow.
Castilian Yellow has this grey-green/beige-ish cast to it that's really hard to describe sufficiently.
(Hint: Think late 60s vintage home appliance color. )
It is a cool color, and the fact that it was offered on Karmann Ghias for the 1967 model year only makes it a fairly rare color for Ghias.
To be perfectly honest, that is the main reason that I like it though - for its rarity.
If I were to pick the shade of Karmann Ghia yellow that I personally like the best strictly for the color itself, it would probably be Pampas Yellow. |

Troll! |
I see a Ghia and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black

... yet I am considered the "troll".
Now back to the OG topic here - I'm anxiously waitiing to hear what the final color choice will be.
Hopefully the decision won't be held out as a surprise only to be revealed once the Ghia has been repainted.
I hate it when that happens. |

Akear, the original color is Lemon yellow. Still present under the hood ,trunk, and interior.
Thanks for the compliments.
The Ghia lived in San Francisco until 2004. So it's solid.
I have original style side view mirrors, antenna, and air vents just waiting to be installed. |
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the original color is not Lemon Yellow - either that, or the Ghia is not a 1970 model year car.
According to the Ghia Color Combinations Chart found here under the Technical tab, the shade of yellow used by VW for the 1970 model year Karmann Ghias - which were manufactured from August 1969 up to July 1970 - is listed as
L 10 E ( 08 ) Pampas Yellow
Ghias made from August 1970 up to July 1971 - which would be considered by Volkswagen as the 1971 model year - were the ones that were offered in
L 11 E ( 29 ) Lemon Yellow
The whole "model year" vs. "calendar year" thing can get very confusing, particularly when looking at charts broken down into sections headed by model year production dates.
I know I have been thrown off by that on more than one occasion, but then maybe it's just me. |

1970 Pampas Yellow...
1971 Lemon Yellow...
Of course it is your call, but I love the Pampas Yellow on my '70:
1) I like the color,
2) I get compliments all the time,
3) You don't see other colors like it,
4) Its original and its period. |

Guys, I'm an idiot.
The tag under the trunk is indeed Pampas Yellow!
Akear, your color looks great on your 70!
The inside door panels on mine (original color) look much more dull and not very appealing.
Probably due to the age.
A new original color paint job may be the ticket. Although there are a number of yellow KG's in Western PA.
Still deciding....
Did I also mention that the car is from San Francisco. Looks like the 70 Pampas is also from Calif.. |

Do you mean the photo I posted? Yes, that's mine and yes its an original Cali car, purchased from John Behel Motors in Yuba City CA. So you have my twin! As I mentioned I get compliments on the color all the time. A desinger clothing house borrowed it for a photoshoot earlier this year because of the color (and the car itself); you can see some of the photos in my gallery to get a better sense of the color, and which just might help convince you to go back to the original color. Also, freshening up the interior door paint is going to be a heck of a lot easier than a complete color change. |
