OK, I think my carb has "bit the weiny". At least I am over it. It's a Weber clone made by Motorcraft.
What would you guys suggest for my buggy?
It's a 1915, large(est) SCAT cam, stock heads that have been cut (maybe getting new bigger valve heads this winter), Header, no muffler etc.
I'm kinda curious about brands........ mainly. But I'm open for suggestions on all aspects.
Thanx! |

Having been a Weber guy and always chasing Italian ones cause they were the better option last year I had a Type 1 for my Tow'd and was being a cheap ass and ended up with an EMPI carb. It was recommended to me so I thought it was worth a chance.
The end result was that the engine builder loved it, it has run without carb issue and it seems it was a good option.
It is a center mount with a funnky little cog thing on the side to sync the flies.
Here is a link to the one I have on the engine, it is like 1901 cc I think Jim said.
http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/empi-epc-38-kit-type-1.html
Came complete and pretty much bolted on without issue.

If you are going to replace the heads I would go with dual 40mm carbs. I've had excellent results with Empi's HPMX carbs. Or if you are set on a single progressive there is a thread about the Empi EGAS carb.

Don't own a tow'd. My orange buggy was made in Alberta. My black one is a Bounty Hunter I picked up in Utah. More pictures of orange one in my gallery, the BH, not so much, haven't started the project yet.
BTW, my moms family is from Iroquois.

Oops...sorry Slalom, wrong Brad: my remarks were aimed at Iguana.
But I'll make sure my tie is straight just in case your mother or her family recognize me!
Please drop me a pm, am most curious as I am a lifelong resident, went to high school at
Seaway when it opened after grade 9 in Morrisburg. _________________ Rosemarie and Paul Hill

I noticed on Iguana's link, it said I had to use an electric fuel pump. Can't the stock mechanical keep up??
I am wondering about this as I'm not sure my mechanical can. (????) By the time I get into 3rd from a strong hole shot she seems to be running dry. I wanted to get a new carb first and see if that was maybe part of the issue. |

A stock pump will support about 150hp with dual carbs. After that it starts to struggle. Make sure all your lines are good and clear and the pump is in good shape. Check your fuel pressure.

40 IDF Webers or 40 HPMX EMPI's. Duals will wake up the engine and jerk a knot in your tail. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

They are a little harder to get dialed in, but work OK. Really need good pre heat. And a true equal length header. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Got the header (Tri-Mil) but not sure about the heat.
But, i guess that is "all for not", anyway. I just went for "jerking a knot in my tail". I wasn't ready for that splurge but..........while I'm at it. I'm just hoping I can "maintain" them as I have heard horror stories about duels. I am getting a meter as well. |

Thanx Joe.
BTW, Dad was in the Army during WWII with a guy from "West By God" and I have known and used that term since I was just a little shaver. people often look at me funny when I say it.
Thank you for all your help!! |

I hope it helps.
On duals, usually the dual barrel IDF's, HPMX's and Delloroto's, once set up, you forget you have them until the peddle is mashed. Most of the trouble I read about is from the dual single barrel carbs.
Been in "west by god" all my life, except when I wasn't.

They might be here by the weekend. Appletree didn't have them in stock so they are having them drop shipped from CA. I'm looking forward.

So what did you end up with ?
Yes it is a Tow'd but I didn't fit in it so I sold it off.
I would never run twins offroad there is to muck float change of pitch which causes issues, much less with a single.
Engine was running Stock Fuel Pump |

Your weenie biting carb was a Progressive setup, with two progressively staged butterflies, like a 4-bbl carb - It was most-likely a 32/36.
Iguana's carb is/was a synchronized 38mm Weber clone, basically a big two-throat '1-bbl' carb.
Both setups desperately want a good functioning preheated intake manifold with good exhaust heat flow through the manifold to prevent carb icing & stumbling.
For the money, I'd shoot for dual carbs - if you go with the EMPI kit mentioned (38mm syncronized) you might end up playing with some jetting. Base jetting as shipped is for a ~1600cc engine...

I went for this:
http://www.appletreeauto.com/DUAL-40-HPMX-EMPI-CARB-KIT-47-7317-0/
I'm hoping to "pull a knot in my tail"
I think jetting is a given but.... My buddy (been racing VW's about 35 years) said he can get it jetted and set up correctly and show me how. I did also order a flow meter to check them in the future.
Will a duel set up be able to run in cooler temps?? Ultimately, I'd like to play in the snow with it but, I understand buggies freeze up pretty bad when it's that cold. I was thinking I could fabricate some sort of shroud and try it. Just a thought. My Tri-Mil header doesn't allow for heating the carb/manifold (as I"m sure you know). |

Duals usually don't suffer from icing, as the manifolds tend to warm up pretty well.
