when i got the car the po was running it with one distributor spring broken.
i got the best rebuild kit i could by and restored it.
i think because of the one spring missing smashing, the internal advance now is more than 30 deg... probably around 40.... i can set the total advance at 35@3000 rpm but yhe idle advance goes atdc.... it runs but oround 2000 rpm it bogs....
i tried to put some very thin sheet metal around the hole to decrease the inner diameter but does not look working... i can t weld close and redrill and don t know how to redo the advance stop pin which is also worn. does anybody sell this pin? any tip on how to build it?

other option is to lock the internal advance and tun cb black box or 123 ignition... any tip in which direction should i go?
thx

Contact Glenn Ring. He's very much a regular on The Samba. His avatar is a distributor ID plate so he'll be easy to find.

After some more checking i found that the distributor engage teeth are worn and that if i turn the distributor shaft with screwdriver clockwise and ccwise it moves some degrees, plus no spring under distributor.
Copper cranckshaft timing gear is same as vw? I found also one vw distributor drive shaft with fuel pump cam on side as per 356.... will it work? It costs 1/10 of porsche replacement
thx

ozzo,

It is cheap insurance to replace the seals anytime you remove the cover.
Better safe than sorry.

Ozzo, unless your engine alternates between clockwise and counterclockwise rotation, hysteresis of the distributor drive will have negligible effect.
All 616 engines use VW parts for cam and distributor drive. Even worn bronze gears can give good results. In fact, I have never had to replace one in over 50 years to correct a timing issue in a running engine, unless the gear was damaged due to faulty distributor drive gear installation.

edit: auto fill correction from Bozo to ozzo

just measured advance angle is 15 deg with bottom dog foot of distributor loched in a vice and more than 20 with dist in car... so i don t know what to think
... even because the effect of a worn gear would be subtracting degres not adding... just i stll have doubt because i made that messurement
