Searched and couldn't find anything, maybe i'm looking for the wrong thing.
I jacked up the rear of my 67 bug today and when i dropped it back down the rear suspension didn't settle down. it looks like there is no engine in it. I rolled it around a bit (not running yet) and it didn't drop down. Did I damage something? sorry if this is a dumb question i'm a first time owner. Thanks for the help!

That's normal, it'll settle when you drive it.

Oil leaking from boots, not normal.

No need to fix the rear suspension but if you must I guess you could roll it around more. I wouldn't bother though.

Leaking axle boots is a common problem, and should be addressed. And yes, you can can roll it around 10, 15, 20 ft forward and back and it should settle out.

axle boots will leak when jacked up (weeping for not being on road). One you roll it back and fort or drive it - check then -- if stil leaking reset boot or replace

Agree. Weeping for the road and from the extreme angle of the axle tube stretching the top and compressing the bottom of the boot. This angle can tear an older boot.

Search for threads about replacing the boots. There are a few simple steps that will make them last much longer.

Agreed, replace the boots and learn how to install them properly. Then they will not start to leak or get torn up when you jack up your VW.
Skip learning and you will end up investing a lot more time and $$ just replacing boots over and over.

I always put something in each springplate like a big bolt or a 17mm nut so the rear won't sag and the boots don't get squashed.

Lot easier to just install the boot the right way....

Good way to get hurt if the bolt or nut decides to slip out.

I do the same thing when replacing boots, as does every pro VW mechanic I've ever met. Keeps the axle level and makes the job much easier to boot Very Happy

Once replaced I also do this every time I jack up the car, or any customers car with swing axles that has good boots. Doing so keeps the stress off of them, which can and does cause oil leaks to develop due to the outer clamp slipping or the boots getting pinched on the frame horn and cracking prematurely.
I've heard "Ever since you changed my oil I have a leak from my axle boots" too many times Wink

If you pick the wrong sort of spacer and you're afraid it's going to shoot out at you like a rocket or something, for your self protection you can put a C-Clamp or Vise-Grip on the nut/spacer/shim chosen to stabilize it in position.

I've never had one pop out , but if using a 17mm nut I've put a piece of safety wire through it to be on the safe side.

I'd actually be more concerned with the axle suddenly dropping under high spring pressure and crushing anything under it or around it like your arm, hands, legs, head etc. than the nut shooting out like a bullet. Remember folks, stored energy can be a KILLER!
