How many of us have fallen for gimmicks like the Metwrench set or the Tornado for your carburetor? (which was allegedly endorsed by Sam Memmelo of the old Shade Tree Mechanic show)

Not me personally, but I worked with a recent Asian migrant that got taken in one of those, "Send me money Nigerian prince" scams. They cleaned her out. This was like 2005

I bought a new pair of beetle running boards from Mid America many years ago for something like $15.
When I got them a few weeks later they were slightly thicker gauge than a pop can- I probably could have rolled them up like burritos with my bare hands. The quality was just plain pathetic. Would have cost me too much money to return, so I ended up just giving those pieces of crap away for free at a swap meet much later.
Lesson learned.

solar panels. Maybe not a gimmick, but even propped up with heavy government incentives, my "return" on my $5k investment is nowhere near the performance of an equal investment in a roth IRA stock index fund invested in 2010.

My parents buy these for me sometimes. Maybe not the "name brand" version, but Aldi variety. Those Germans always make good stuff.

Leased a Subaru. Let me say at the get go, I NEVER go for any of the aftermarket add ons. But This being a keyless ignition car I went for the insurance on the key. Naturally it was part of a package that included polish, wash, interior conditioner, leather cleaner etc. $1200. Now every month I beat myself up for agreeing to the snake oil.

Was looking for gimmicks as related to automotive products, not Nigerian Prince and double your investment scams and the like.

For instance, my mechanic at the time called Split Fire spark plugs a gimmick, but there are probably people who swear by them.

Another one that comes to mind is the magnetic something or other you put around the fuel line I think it was.
