Instead of polluting each and every section and thread with weird off-brand discussions about peculiarities involved with each of these unrelated engine choices, why not give them their own section for adherents to prattle on amongst themselves in a supportive environment? Sambarus could get their very own section to investigate the various maladies and misteps involved with this choice, and so could all the other oddball off-brand engine options. I prefer vehicles to be discussed in their own dedicated sections, regardless of powerplant.
Although the powerplants might be different, the issues and other questions that will arise make sense to be in the specific vehicle category.
If you do not want to be supportive of someone talking about something you are not interested in, don't read and don't post in their thread. _________________ How to Post Photos

Yeah well, we've been over this before. I'm not talking about build threads, which are about the model specific vehicles and the owners' choices therein. I'm distinctly referring to the divorced tech threads about off-brand engines (or engine conversions of any kind), which are essentially about the off-topic consequences of the choices one makes, or is considering at a future time and place.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639023
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639373
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=638880
And of course, this epic abortion thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639248
Since engine conversions are essentially taking place in nearly every model section here, the flow of technical information about arcane engine details really don't require that they be tied to any specific model. Having access to those details in one section would actually be a benefit for those who make these engine choices.
So, I'm just suggesting a general tech section for specific discussions of engine conversions where vehicle is really a secondary concern ("How do I replace the waterpump on my EQ47?" or "Will the EQ47 dribble valve fit on my EG67?"). Build threads for a specific vehicle in which an engine conversion is part of the overall project would still be relevant to the model section. This is logically consistent with the site architecture and has precedence on other sites. _________________ Casey--

You are right it could be in a different section but they are in Vanagons so it does fit in the Vanagon section at this time.
It seems easy to ignore these types of threads if you don't like the content since they all have Subaru or Subaru-related words in the subject line. _________________ How to Post Photos

Some good advice here Casey, instead of going in each conversion thread and attempting to derail a subject that you have no interest in..
I very much enjoy helping conversion folks and specifically own my van due to the conversion. Conversions are as much a part of Vanagons as different wheels or any other mod...in what way is it any different? Its fine that you don't approve, but others on here do enjoy their converted vans and I truly enjoy helping them.
Thank you Everett for leaving them where they are easily found. _________________ 1983 Diesel Vanagon Westfalia chassis with Subaru 2.2l |

This would be no different than setting up a body and paint or custom wheel/tire sections. The divorced tech questions about the powerplant platforms being discussed don't care which vehicle chassis they're being installed into. I remember a similar resistance to breaking out the Eurovans from Vanagons (I too was initially resistant), but now look at how much more useful it's been for the former, and how much less cluttered the latter section is today. I'm suggesting you take a very similar step in the right direction. _________________ Casey--

As you can see, those who profit from the proliferation of off-topic conversion threads would like to maintain the status quo, as they believe it allows them to more easily peddle their goods and services to ever more members. The truth is, a dedicated conversion section would still allow them to peddle their wares, but it would unclutter the chassis specific sections to more easily focus on vehicle specific issues...and of course build threads, which would still allow the conversion industrial complex to market their goodies if conversions are topical.
This is a practical, pragmatic and easily manageable change to the site architecture that would benefit all the members. _________________ Casey--
