So are there places you would be wise to drive a different car?

I hit a car show at Mt Washington where most of us hit the asscess road up the mountain. It would be fun to take my bug there but something tells me that would me difficult maybe impossible for a stock aircooled vw.

Unless your car is lowered, a stock VW bug is a very capable car on most trails, your bug has probably seen rougher "good" roads in its lifetime than most SUVs have seen "off-road".

A stock hieght VW Bug can go a long ways off road. Now hill climbing is another issue. Just go slow.

Up won't be the problem. Back down might be a different story. You won't be able to ride your brakes. And I would hate to use a low gear to slow your decent.

Antonio in Mexico City sold an Ultima Beetle to a guy in Libya in about 2008. Then they had their revolution so the guy got in his Beetle and headed east to the safety of Egypt. Just in time for their revolution in 2011. Again, he got in his Beetle and headed NE out of Egypt. Yep, you guessed it, straight into Syria in time for their civil war!

I did that road in a Ford in the 90's, and also as a kid in the 60's.
They pretty much make a big deal out of it because cars in the 50's 60 & 70's would overheat going up the mountain.
I can't think of a trip we took with my Father in the 60's and early 70's where we didn't have some type of car trouble.
A stock healthy VW is geared in a manner that as long as you keep the revs up you'll not have an issue.
Going down, you'll use your engine braking without issue.
Remember that VW's are really good cars, they didn't get that reputation by failing.

Years ago I off roaded my dad's 356 Roadster in the Mojave Desert. It didn't do too bad since it had (has) overriders, torsion bar suspension, no pumpkin in the rear and the rearward weight bias. I still have a few dents in the pan. Dad wasn't too thrilled about it, though. A few years later the car was restored and I wouldn't even think about doing that now--especially since the car is mine.
