Please help! I am going nuts trying to figure this out!

I am trying to remove the engine from my 1966 bus (which actually have a 72 Beetle engine, but I don't think that should matter for this).

Everything has been completed to take the engine out (e.g. generator wires, fuel line, lower mounting bolts, etc), except the drivers side upper mounting bolt. My problem is that it's not really a bolt that can be removed (see photos). The last photo is not from my bus but seems to provide a better view of what I think I'm dealing with (?).

Yes, I tried a search first and was at least able to find out either:
1. there may only be 3 mounting bolts instead of 4
2. I may need a "Captive nut for top left engine mounting bolt" (https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/111101135/captive-nut-for-twinport-case/)

Any and all advice is GREATLY appreciated!

What you're seeing IS a captive nut. Look on the other side of it.

Your last pic shows a threaded insert in the case (it's normal). The "nut" is attached to the case.

Do you have a jack under the engine? What seems hung up?

Thank you!

Yes I do have a jack under it. It seems to be hung up only on that upper drivers side corner.

I will try to get to it from the other side, but that didn't seem possible, at least coming from the top.

You will need a 17mm socket, wobbly extension, long extension, 3/8" drive ratchet.

Crawl under the bus and determine if your clutch throw-out arm is straight (pointing straight up) or curved (leaning toward the tranny). If it's curved, it is right in front of the bolt that you need to take out. Put the socket with the wobbly extension on the bolt and try to find a good angle to get the other extension and ratchet on. If your throw-out arm is straight, it's easier, but not really easy, to get to the bolt. Good luck!

I have a thin walled wobbly socket that makes life much easier when working with that bolt.

I remove the heater box from that side when I pull the motor. I can then get a box wrench on it easy.

I wish I would have thought of that last time I pulled a motor in a parking lot on a road trip.

17mm swivel socket on a 24" extension.

Or use a M10x70 bolt with a Allen head.

This is what every VW I have gets when an engine goes back in.

Or...

^^^ This is how it is done. A complete and utter pain in the ass at times, but this is just how things are sometimes.

Switch to that allen head bolt upon reinstalling the engine and don't look back. Plus, the allen head makes your engine less theft prone. Less of an issue these days but a nice comfy feeling nonetheless.

Good luck stealing my engine, you better have a few hours.

Dual carbs, remote filter and large tube headers in a bug.

Thank you everyone for the fantastic tips! With your wonderful expertise and a bit of arm contortion, I successfully got the motor out. Thank you as well for the allen bolt suggestion for the re-install. Good stuff! Smile

Kindly,
Greg

Congrats...when your arm heals from the 3 breaks required to remove that bolt, you can get back to working on your bus!
