Picked up this bus back in August 2015 from a good friend of mine who parked this when he left for college in 2001. It sat there since and is still in pretty good shape. I paid him 4500 bucks which I felt was more than fair (wife's not so happy). We were able to get it running pretty quick after we cleaned all the mouse carcasses out of the engine shroud and heat exchange. I have had the pleasure of growing up with this bus and am looking to get it back to its glory days. I have started from the bottom up. Focusing on brakes, axels and cv joints first. I will be pulling the engine as soon as I can get it rolling smoothly. (back brakes were seized up). I am a shade tree mechanic that has a few very experienced buddies helping me along the way. I look forward to all of your help and contribution to making this my dream machine.......
Fresh out of the barn. First time in the sun since 2001!
Just needed a wash!
Pulling all the rusted up drive parts off and putting through the parts wash and then the blast cabinet. These parts are shining up nicely. It took a 22 ton press to get the axel freed from the hub!!!! Man please do not let these sit for 14 years, and if you must please be sure to put some anti-seize on your axel.... I am looking for feedback and pointers. |

Boy, that bus looks dry and rust free for a rust belt bus. Had the pervious owner had it painted before parking it? How's the rust under it?
It looks like a great bus to start with at a really good price. Don't forget to change ALL the fuel hoses, even the ones inside fuel tank bay. Chances are they are original and are needing to be changed.
As TCash stated, you should change the spring plate bushing while you have it torn down that far already. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Pretty clean under. I will check the spring bushing buddy had this pretty much restored prior to park inking long term. Just cleaning up rusty spots with wire brush. Then hitting with rust treatment. Getting most of my parts from JBugs. They seem pretty fair. I replaced all gas lines, brake vacuum lines. She runs pretty well but want to make this a family friendly vehicle. I really appreciate all the pointers. Keep them coming! |

The bus looks good! One suggestion- Get the Bentley service Manual for your bus. It will really help you work on it. I picked one up used for $10 bucks on Amazon.
On the bearings, there are spring clips in a groove in front of the bearings. Remove the grease seals and you'll see those spring clips. Once I removed the clips, I just used a brass punch and knocked the bearings and races out, insuring I was hitting them in a spot that wouldn't do damage. I then put them back in the same way.

This bus has been to many shows over it life. When my friend first bought it in 1995 we found over 100 ticket stubs in a old school band-aide box....... Everything from Anthrax to Z.Z. Top. Still have all the ticket stubs, Came with the bus. This bus continued to be a concert wagon through the fall of 2001 when we all decided to listen to our parents and go to college.......... Then this bus sat in a dirt floored Onion Barn until I finally got my buddy to sell it to me. We saw Stanford Prison Experiment in St. Louis. We only got pulled over 5 times on the round trip... This bus will for ever be Cop Traps 1.......

It is for sure a nod to Jerry. This was my buddies vanity plate, but we always gave him crap for it really standing for Cop Traps because we were always getting the royal treatment for Illinois finest while cruising the bus.

Primed up and ready for reassembly. Will adjust the swing arm to address sag, but I am considering lowering front and back. My garage door is not going to accommodate stock height.... Thoughts? I am not looking for this to be a low rider by any means but need to sit at about 75" ish......

Kawasaki green drums?
I wouldn't lower it but there are a variety of opinions on that subject. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Sometimes you just got to go with the rattle cans you have left around the shop. This is high heat engine paint. So should out live me...... |
