A friend of mine recently went to an estate sale.
Outside the house, overgrown with weeds and small trees, he found this roof rack.
The family stated that they had a VW bus many years before. The bus was long gone. They said this rack had been outside for over 30 years.

From researching The Samba, I think this might be a 59 -60 Westy rack for a few reasons:
Slopes - It measures 9 1/2" inches from the floor to the bottom of the slats on one end, and 11 1/4" at the other. You can see the legs are different heights when viewed from the side.
There is no evidence of corner reinforcement for the "legs"
There are 2 attachment holes for the slats on each end. There is only one hole at the center attachment point, but it lines up to the center of the two hole ends.
The slats are 53" long
The uprights for the top portion are marked 16188
The 90 degree corner points are riveted with aluminum rivets and have no markings.

The aluminum slats, I believe, were added later. The screws holding them are stainless steel.

So, what do you guys think?
Thanking you in advance for your input

Maybe they have them sitting with the tent inside the house?

Maybe. I am having lunch today with the guy who found this. I am going to get the name and address and try to ask them if I could look for the clamps. Who knows? Could be there.

Definitely looks like 59-60 rack (dual screw). It should have a single brass plaque as well like this:

Same rack I sold last year:

I go to a lot of estate sales. When I'm in garages or sheds I always look up in the rafters, hoping that one day I'll spot a rack, tent, etc. that has been hidden away for decades. If I didn't just buy a sloper rack I'd be trying to buy it off you. Sweet find. Oh yeah, check the kitchen for the Mauser bowl. Laughing

Yeah, this was a heck of a find.
It is really nice when you have friends that know you like VW buses.
I have gotten a lot of good stuff over the years from friends finding stuff.

FYI - In case you were interested in buying it, it looks like I have sold it already.

Thanks to all of you that PMed me asking about it.

And as always, thanks to YOU, the Samba members, for taking your time to help educate me about this.

You guys and gals ROCK!!!!
